About the Author

Samantha Snyder has been doodling her whole life. While teaching elementary school, she often drew up coloring pages and printables for her students and fellow teachers. She decided to start sharing her creations and in 2008, Doodle Art Alley was founded.

Doodle Art Alley is dedicated to giving those squiggly lines the proper credit they deserve. Who would have thought that such a small and simple idea could possess so much potential?

50 Fun to Color and Whimsical Hand-Drawn Animals – printed on one side of the page

[[VIDEOID:cb8babfe1ec378ce8a87b7b22c87c5a2]]I have a lot of fun coloring Samantha Snyder's designs. She is able to bring a real sense of whimsy to the 50 animals designs in this book. She does a little bit of “doodles” within each of them but not to the point of being tiny and intricate and hard to color. I find that I can finish one of these designs fairly quickly in an hour or so while watching (really listening) to a television show. I love using markers for bright and bold colors that make the animals jump off the page.

The animals are generally placed in a setting that is appropriate but which has still has the fun and comical feel as the animal. At the end of this review, I will list the animal designs included in the book.

The coloring book is a smaller format than most other coloring books. That seems to be the style of the Doodle Art Alley books. I like it for these designs as they are well centered on the page without dead space around them.

The designs are printed on one side of bright white non-perforated paper. The binding is glued rather than sewn, so you can cut pages out if you choose to do so. I was able to break the spine enough to get the book to lay fairly flat and it was easy to get to all parts of the design to color.

Each of the designs has a framing line around them. This seems to be the style of this artist. I appreciate it as it gives me a natural stopping point, saving me time and ink.

I test all of my coloring books with various types of coloring medium (which I will list in the comments section below.) Here are the results of my tests:

All of my markers (water and alcohol-based, fine, ultra-fine, and brush end) bled through this paper. My India ink brush pen also bled through. My gel pens (all brands and nib sizes) all left a color shadow on the back of the page. My coloring pencils worked well for their lead type. The soft lead blended really well. The hard lead left indents at the page of the page if I pressed hard when coloring.

When using markers, I cut down a piece of chipboard and place it beneath my working page to keep the ink from leaking through and marring the page below.

The animals in this coloring book include: alligator, anteater, bird, bison, blowfish, bugs, camel, cat, cow, dinosaur, dog, dolphin, dragon, dragonflies, duck, eagle, elephant, flamingo, fox, frog, giraffe, hedgehog, hermit crab, iguana, jellyfish, kangaroo, kiwi, lemur, meerkat, house, owl, panda, peacock, penguin, pig, porcupine, rabbit, raccoon, rhinoceros, seahorse, shark, sheep, skunk, snail, tiger, turtle, unicorn, walrus, and zebra.

~~ 50 simpler designs for those who love to color ~~

I actually purchased this book for our nine year old daughter who LOVES to color. Of course when it arrived I had to "try" it out! (See pic.) With the designs in this book not being so filled in as some of the other adult coloring books out there, it does not take the same length of time to complete a picture. For busy moms (and kids) this keeps things fresh. I was able to finish this picture in between schooling the kids.

There are 50 different animal pictures featured in alphabetical order. Each picture is on its own page i.e. the back is plain. Paper is white and the size of each image box (not page) is 7" x 7". Although marketed as an Adult Coloring Book I think the author/artist is missing out on a massive audience by not marketing this to youngsters. In my opinion the images in this book are more "kid" appealing than "adult".

Anything I would like to see different? Yes! Perforated pages please so that when completed the "artist" at home can display their work by tearing out the page easily. OR as in our case, where two or more are coloring it would be nice to be able to tear the pages out easily before starting to color.

Some of the animals are obvious, others a little more obscure so it would be nice to have the titles under the picture. Just so you know I took several pictures of the pages but the one I colored is "Bugs".

Overall a great book and I know our daughter will have many hours of pleasure using it. Thanks, Liz

Fun, whimsical, animals to color with just the right amount of complexity for me!

This is a nice collection of animal designs, with a wide variety of animals A-Z.

I tend to like designs to color with some detail, but not so detailed that you lose your patience and eyesight. So I prefer less complex designs, as in this book. Most of the animals are centered on the page with some background details around them, so it isn't too intimidating for me. I easily finished my page(see my photos) in one evening. I think these animals will appear to young and older people--they are cute and whimsical, but not juvenile.

Features of the book:
-50 designs are on the front of the page only--nothing on the back
-Crisp, clean line art (I hate it when the lines are blurry)
-8.5x8.5” Bright white paper--the same as all the Amazon Createspace publications.
-Pages are not perforated
-Designs are suitable for markers (some pages will require a fine tip), colored pencils, and gel pens.
-Crayons will work for even some of the images.
-Markers may bleed through, so use a blank page as a "color protector page".
-Glossy front and back covers

Overall, this book provides some really charming animal designs, and should keep you busy coloring for many days!

A cute book with a strong message, this book reads as though Dr Seuss consulted with Dave Ramsey and a Southern Baptist Grandmother. I love that someone wants to help every child know that there are always right decisions and wrong ones, and to grow up to be a successful, kind, or generally good person, you should always be wise.

I started watching the morning and evening news when I was ten years old and did three years of journalism in high school, so you could call me a fan of the news. Juuuuuuuust maybe. I’m also a fan of cute middle-grade novels because the warm feeling they give me at their best is a good substitute for the warm feeling I get from being around my cats.

It’s been a while since I was on the newspaper staff way back in high school (aka five years ago), but reading Brooke’s Not-So-Perfect Plan brought back fond memories of my newsie days. Interviewing students during lunch for articles, editing other students’ articles as senior editor, the joy of seeing my name in print as the author of something,… The book is so sweet and funny it made me temporarily forget how hectic newsie life was too! Middle school is generally awful, but Brooke’s misadventures with her friends will make you miss it just a little bit.

If you were or are an overachiever, you’ll see a lot of yourself in Brooke and relate to how she wants to do everything but seems to get nothing done. I wasn’t in much of a reading mood when I got to Brooke’s Not-So-Perfect Plan, but the giggleworthy incidents of Brooke being dyed purple and Vanessa getting stuck under a chair put me back into one! This is the kind of book that will fix almost any bad mood.

However, the novel is a little aimless at times as Brooke tries to do everything–stay on her soccer team and become captain, be the section head for the advice column, run for sixth-grade president, and more–and gets very little done because she’s so spread so thin. An overachiever learning her limits is a viable plot, but there needs to be something cohesive to bind it all together and there’s no such thing in Brooke’s story. Without that cohesive element, it’s hard to want to pick the book back up once you set it down.

My suspension of disbelief was tested by the school paper’s apparently small staff but enormous popularity. What I observed in high school was that a paper’s staff is directly related to the paper’s popularity among the student body. My school paper’s staff was ten people my sophomore year, seven my junior year, and three my senior year. All three years, we had little to no interest from students in either taking the class or reading the paper. We got a different school’s newspaper mailed to us regularly and they had a fifty-plus student staff in addition to lots of interest both in and out of the school. The inverse relationship between the Lincoln Log‘s popularity (so popular that supporting character Tim becomes a school celebrity) and its staff size seems strange to me.

Still, Brooke’s Not-So-Perfect Plan is a sweet-as-sugar start to a new MG series sure to entertain middle-schoolers, teenagers, and adults alike. I’m suddenly very glad my ARC of this book came as a 2-in-1 edition and I can get started on Vanessa’s Fashion Face-Off when I’m ready!

Charming Middle-Grade Read

A delightful read, full of fun, charm, and Whittemore's signature humor.

Brooke is struggling with problems that many of us can relate to - whether we've just started middle school or are long past graduation. She is optimistic and full of energy, keeping the pacing brisk and lively. With the help of her friends, Brooke is able to deal with realistic challenges with both honesty and humor.

Highly recommended for young women looking for an engaging story that will keep them guessing - and laughing.

A fun, diverse read

Brooke's Not-So-Perfect Plan is the first in a super-fun series about four friends who write an advice column for their middle school paper. That premise alone drew me in! The first book tells the story of Brooke, who is extremely relatable no matter how old you are. Why? Because she's crazy-busy all the time. She's taken on way too much between her sports, hanging out with her friends, and writing this advice column. This is a fun and diverse novel about friendship and the pressures of being an overachieving middle school student.

An interesting story for your kids!

This book tells about Emily Westacott, a girl who really loves to read books. She is a girl that always wore glasses and always beaten by his brother, Jake. She always gets up late and always late in school. Why? Because she read books every night and sleep so late. That's why her principal always complained to her parents. She really loves to read books and her love of books meant that she had developed a reputation for having rather extensive imaginations. Kids could learn a lesson from Emily.

Though I don't have kids to read this book for, but I like the story. This storybook is interesting, especially for those who usually spent their quality time together with their kids. For sure your kids will love the story of Emily Westacott.

and I loved those books

As a kid, I used to read Alfred Hitchcock and the three investigators, and I loved those books. Looking back, I thought they exercised my mind really well, so I was looking for something of a slightly younger age bracket for my daughter who is 11. In my opinion, this book is absolutely perfect for a parent looking for an interesting book. As it involves murder, I do recommend that you sit with them and explain it to them a little bit at the start. The book itself is not overly long, and the language is not overly complex - but complex enough to help them learn. Will buy the next chapter when it comes out.

It is fun transitional book for young readers, and parents who enjoy reading to their kids. It’s a great storytime book with a higher word count than the average picture book, however it isn’t as long as a chapter book. surely your kids will enjoy this.

A must-have for every child's library

This children's book is so heartwarming. I love seeing rescued pups bring love, joy and comfort to others and this truly shares that journey. It seems to be based on a true story! I can't wait to share it with all my friends in the special education world! I know others will love it like I do.

Charlie Trick is Magical!

As a professional magician, I must say, that I found Charlie Trick to be a very good book for children to read our be read to. Charlie and his assistant, Abra-ca-debra make a great team. I loved the way Connor incorporated Debra's name into the name of Charlie's assistant. It reminds me of how incorporated my stage name. I recommend to parents, grandparents, children to purchase this book! I'm looking forward to the next adventure of Charlie Trick.

Two thumbs up!

I enjoyed reading this book and sharing it with my students. The illustrations are amazing! The students enjoyed the rhyming words within the story and all shared a memory that they had with a grandparent! I would definitely recommend this book to fellow teachers and parents with young children.

Teacher Review: Sweet Book, Stimulates Great Gonversations about Personal Connections, Students LOVED!

This is such a sweet book. It promotes positive relationships between older generations and younger generations. I am a teacher and I read Fishing With Pop to both of my third grade classes. My students have been taught how to give a good book review and justify their opinion with evidence. They tend to be very opinionated and can be harsh critics. They LOVED this book. I was surprised they all gave it a 5 star review. A few of their reasons were as follows: "It reminds me of when I went fishing with my dad/granddad. It was really funny (and they referred to different lines from the book). The illustrations and background were really cool." What I liked about Fishing with Pop is that it launched my students into talking about different experiences that they have had with their grandparents or dads. For me that is a sign of a great book, when it makes you feel something and you make that personal connection. I also completely understood what my students meant when they said the illustrations are cool. The illustrator did an amazing job combining real pictures in the background with a cartoon overlay. It was fascinating to my students and they wanted me to go back and show them every page. I would highly recommend this book. I think it is a great read, especially for third grade and below. It would also make a great gift for a grandfather or from a grandparent to a grandchild.

Cute story with beautiful illustrations

Our six year old daughter loved the story. She was able to read this herself. It was a cute rhyming story. I had to call my husband over so he could view the illustrations because I loved them so much. I would definitely recommend this book. I was able to borrow this book with my KU subscription. I am considering purchasing the paperback because it is a great price. If it looks as good in person as it does in kindle format, it would be worth it. I'll update if I purchase.

A treat for story time or bedtime!

It's hard to find good books for toddlers, especially ones that you can use for story time! I generally look for books with clear, vibrant pictures, a large format and minimal text with a good read aloud flow. A Kiss Means I Love You delivers on all of those criteria. The photographs by Eric Futran perfectly illustrate the text on the page, and are sure to captivate even the youngest story listener. Babies love looking at real photos, and the emotions on each page are clearly portrayed, whether it be a pouty face or a proud one.

At one sentence per page, it's just the right length for the very young, and the excellent rhyming gives it a great read aloud flow. This book covers all kinds of body language, from "a smile means I'm happy", to "A shush means be quiet...that's a little too loud!" There's a nice mix of ethnicities and a variety of boys and girls. The book wraps up with a good night kiss and a peaceful picture of a sleeping child that is sure to plant the right kind of sleepy ideas in any young child's head. This is sure to generate lots of requests for re-reads and is a perfect selection for any baby or toddler's private collection. It's also great for story time!

Perfect for toddlers

My toddler and even five-year-old love this book. The younger one likes to imitate the facial expressions and gestures on each page. Her older sister can "read" along with the simple, rhyming sentences. I appreciate the girls, boys, and adults of varying ethnic backgrounds featured.

One of the Best Photographic Stories We Have Read!

It is difficult to find quality picture books with actual photographs that I really enjoy. I finally found one, A Kiss Means I Love You, and it is such a cute book with catchy text and great photos! Every page shows a different form of nonverbal communication using photographs of ethnically diverse children. This is a great tool to teach young children these different forms of communication!

The text of the story is perfect! It rhymes perfectly, flows smoothly, and makes you want to read it over and over again! With one short sentence or phrase on each page, this book is perfect for very young readers.

Amazing photographs perfectly accompany the text and easily portray the intended form of nonverbal communication such as hugging, kissing, yawning, crying, and laughing. My son absolutely loves looking at all the children and I love that the photographer chose children of many different ethnicities.

This is becoming one of my son's favorite books! I highly recommend reading this book because young children love looking at photographs of other children. They will be completely mesmerized! Catchy text and perfect photos make this a great book! I believe this would be most appropriate for 6 months and older. I wish this was a board book!

About the Author
Marti Dumas is a mama who spends most of her time doing mama things. You know-- feeding ducks in parks, constructing Halloween costumes, facilitating heated negotiations, reading aloud, throwing raw vegetables on a plate and calling it dinner, and shouting, "watch out!" whenever there are dog piles on the walk to school.

Sometimes she writes, but only very occasionally and in the early morning. And, yes. She really does really, really like fantasy books. A lot.

We love Jaden Toussaint!

My kids and I were super excited to get our copy of the 2nd book in this series, and it did not disappoint! Jaden Toussaint is such a fun character! All 3 of my kids, ages 12, 10 and 7 loved the story and the superb illustrations. We loved the way JT worked with his friends to solve the Ladek/caterpillar invasion at his school, the loving relationship between JT, his sister, and his parents, and all of the clever acronyms! And of course, who could forget the 3 Minute Dance Party! I thought the author did a fabulous job of weaving seemingly unconnected story elements (an amazing winter coat, a sort-of-scary comic book) into the satisfying ending, where JT and his friends show excellent teamwork and leadership skills. This is a book my kids will read again and again, and that I will enjoy sharing with other families.

Jaden Toussaint is a great child to be around

Jaden Toussaint is a great child to be around. His inquisitiveness and imagination are a joy to read about. The author conveys several familial, academic, and authoritative paradigms.
1. Analytical skills. Jaden is a thinker and is respected and honored for that at his age by family, peers, and teacher.
2. Social skills. He and his friends know who they are and what skills they possess. They are learning collaboration and to work together in unity.
3. Authority figures. Jaden is precocious at times but it's not to an extreme. He is a little boy with an active imagination yet he is a "scientist" who knows that research is key. His family and teacher allow him to discover himself but still are balanced when it comes to "drawing the line" with Jaden. He is aware that he is the child and his parents and teacher are the authority.
4. Science, YA, & Fantasy. It's evident that Dr. Hooooo? the comic book is a parody of the television show Dr. Who but the characters are animals and not humans. This inspired Jaden to the make the physical correlation between the Ladeks in the comic book to a buck moth caterpillar.
5. Emotional Intelligence. Jaden was afraid of the Ladeks in the comic book. But between his sister and his friends by the end of the book well, I don't want to spoil it for you. PURCHASE IT and find out for yourself...lol!
Marti Dumas does an excellent job in presenting a loving balanced family and how they are raising a child to know "he is more than enough."

I love everything about this book! Like Jaden's first adventure, 'The Ladek Invasion' is ridiculously well written and illustrated and more fun than I had bargained for! Jaden Toussaint is brilliant, and kind, and so frustratingly determined to be and do right that he embodies the very best of childhood itself. This book features a team of amazing young people and the adults smart enough to help them to find and use their voices. I am so excited to share this book with my k-2 readers. They are going to love seeing themselves in Jaden and seeing his adventures in their own.

Essential for a classroom library

Great story written by a 5th grader. It is in dual language-Spanish and English. It covers some of the writing ideas such as Introduction, conclusion, transition words, onomatopoeia, and sentences in an entertaining story format. It would be a great addition to a classroom library. It also serves as motivation for students that they can become published authors. You don't have to be an adult to be an author. Highly recommend.
