is saying nothing but "avoid procrastination" a horrible word that a child would dismiss instinctively

What David makes in this book with simple words and nursery-style rhyme is notable. When he says: "...first you have to start... get ready, get set, GO! is saying nothing but "avoid procrastination" a horrible word that a child would dismiss instinctively. Same thing with "patient" and open-spirit. I cannot imagine a most beautiful unpretentious poetry for insufflating these positive values into a child. The mushroom characters are cute and the illustrations are delightful. Very enjoyable reading, highly recommended for kids 2-6 year old!

READY, SET, GO!

Mushroom tales are a series of picture book early readers that feature motivational messages. Available in kindle and paperback format with simple colorful illustrations, each volume is available in English or in a bilingual, English/Spanish edition. Amount of text is minimal, averaging four rhyming lines per page, accompanied by an illustration on the opposite page.

In this volume, the Mushroom People are talking about Life as a race. Whether we run the race on our own or with friends, the important thing is to begin and challenge ourselves. It doesn't matter whether we win or lose; we will always learn something about ourselves in the process of trying. As long as we do our best and work hard to practice what we learn, we can't help but be a winner!

Targeted for ages six through eight and the beginning grades of school, the book is also a delightful bedtime story for preschoolers. Recommended for parents, teachers and librarians as a fun motivational book.

Motivational story

This little motivational picture book is for slightly older children of preschool or early reader age, although the message would suit adults as well. The illustrations are colorful and pleasant. To identify with mushrooms is a bit different. The story works well, although I always find it such a waste of space to dedicate half of the book to a bit of text. I guess, in this case the narrative is important. I believe the aim of this book is to get kids going towards a goal in life. Very educational!

A cute Peter Rabbit story

Do you remember Peter Rabbit from when you were little? Well he is still around and has some new stories! Mr. Tod's Trap is one of those!

This story is about Peter Rabbit and a couple of his friends. They find some radishes, but they figure it must be a trap set by Mr. Tod! They try to avoid it, but the call of the radishes is too strong. One of the friends actually get caught in the trap! The friends must then work together before Mr. Tod can get a hold of them and eat them for dinner!

This book isn't technically a picture book. It is one of those 4 x 4 square books. However, it would still be great for a storytime or for a beginning reader.

I wasn't a huge fan of the illustrations. They are computer graphic animation style. That is just my personal preference though.

Rose Gordon has lived between the Rio Grande and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of Northern New Mexico for most of her life. Excellent!

When my parents were reading to me as a young child, The Gatekeeper would have been a top and repeat choice. Then, as I began to read, I would have chosen it to puzzle out and struggle with the words. I would have read it again and again. I loved The Gatekeeper as I would have throughout my childhood and I’m now a full-fledged adult! It is an inspiring and superb story that unfolds with a very trustworthy, soothing rhythm.

Rose Gordon is very generous with The Gatekeeper! In addition to her story, she includes bonus recipes and a full glossary in the final pages of the book making it even more appealing, delightful, helpful and accessible to all ages.

My advice? Buy two. One for your just born grandson and one for yourself. No home should be without The Gatekeeper.

Amazing Story

I am so fortunate that my life's path has crossed paths with this talented, heartful and sweet woman who is the author of this introspective and uplifting book. Both adults and young people will enjoy reading this lovely story because it speaks to the reader about each of our purpose in life and how each of us, no matter our life circumstances, can guide our lives with kindness, faith and love.

Different, but good!

“It never was a fair fight.
Young James, the duke’s son, asks too many questions. At least that’s what everyone at Callander Castle thinks after all but the last of his tutors quit and his uncle ships him off to be educated at Cranford Abbey. Unfortunately, the once-beautiful abbey has problems of its own, including cracked walls, a leaking roof, and shattered stained glass windows. Not to mention the pesky herd of unicorns that continues to enter the abbey’s orchards and claim them as their own.
The only hope to save the abbey, it seems, is money raised by Abbot Aelian’s golden apple cider, made from a recipe passed down in his family for generations. But that means getting rid of the orchard’s unwelcome visitors. And as everyone knows, unicorns have very sharp horns. Monks do not.
James has an idea that could help defeat these hungry beasts, but first must find someone to listen to him. For once, he might be the only one asking the right questions. And the only one who knows the perfect hero for the job.”

I could fill this review with a lot of My Little Pony references...
“A Plague of Unicorns” was aimed for a much younger audience then I normally read (it even had pictures/illustrations!) but I really enjoyed it! I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but I thought I would give it a try. It was so cute! I really liked James’ personality and though the writing style was different, I liked it too!

My Review:

Thought I’d expand my book reviews and give juvenile fiction a go. Jane Yolen’s medieval tale is told in a style very much like those of fables and fairy tales. This novel is brief, but Yolen quickly gains her reader’s interest and sympathy. She packs in plenty of humor and adventure. Illustrations are included throughout the text that adds extra appeal. Parents should love the main character, doesn’t show even a hint of sarcasm. Parents this is a great book for your children.

Not up to Yolen's usual standard

A short and sweet read that my almost-8-year-old son really enjoyed. The story itself was a very good one, although I’ll admit it didn’t live up to its potential in many ways. Though Jane Yolen is considered a living classic, more or less, I found this book didn’t live up to her normal standards. She committed several faux pas that were hard to get past. For instance, the first three chapters were mere set-up for the “real story” of the rest of the book. I didn’t even feel an ounce of sympathy or true, personal interest in the story until the fourth chapter when we at last meet the main character, James.

My son enjoyed the story, it’s true, but he’s eight, and a boy, and much easier to please than I am. He doesn’t know that saying things like “the cape was rent and torn” is repetitious, and something a seasoned author should know better than to say. And while he didn’t complain about the extraordinarily long sentences throughout the book, I noticed he had many moments of confusion as to what exactly was happening in the story, and I did a lot of explaining along the way. This is a boy who has been reading The Chronicles of Narnia to himself since he was five. He’s not easily confused, let’s just put it that way.

As I said, though, the story itself was a good one. There were so many great, magical elements in it. And with monks being some of the main characters, mentions of God and godly virtues were prevalent, which I loved. However, all the things I liked about this book seemed to stop short before they reached their full potential. The parts that sparked my imagination ended up falling flat because the author didn’t do enough about them, or show enough about them.

I also found it a bit odd that James himself, our main character, ended up not doing anything much at all. He called on someone else, in the end, to take care of the unicorn problem. He didn’t end up being much of a hero at all. If I had been able to sympathize with him a bit more, I would have forgiven him his unheroism a bit quicker. But alas, I couldn’t even do that.

What a girl Mary Anne is! She's great!

Wow! Mary Anne sure has a lot of courage! She's been through a terrific struggle this year...still having horrible nightmares about the house fire (& waking up in tears), slowly mending her broken heart over Logan, & most of all facing her many fears with a steely determination that is rare in human beings. Cokie's still tormenting Mary Anne & reducing her to tears. I love how she gets up her courage to stand up to that mean Cokie Mason & put her in her place(not to mention going against her dad's wishes, but for a good cause). I also loved how her friends stood by her & stood up to Cokie too & exposed Cokie's dishonesty in the yearbook contest! I think it's great that Mary Anne's active in the yearbook & even though she's a little scared of Cokie, she doesn't let Cokie cow her out of the yearbook. Way to go, Mary Anne!

May I mention this is the best of the BSCFF books so far! Cokie was finally cut down to her real self , a insecure SNOB, by Mary Anne!Not only she did that, she and her dad finally aired out some issues that have been there for along time. Such as her father being overproctective, her stepmother's feeling of being left out, and the nightmares of the fire. Mary Anne also displayed her own struggle of overcoming her shyness ( with some help from Abby and the club, and support from Logan)and standing up to Cokie, in front of whole school! She became the same reliable ,caring, but improved Mary Anne.

This is just ONE great book of NINE!

This book was definitly great. I love the fact that Mary Anne has changed and will now stand up for herself, instead of waiting for her friends to stick up for her. I mean, if she were to get in a big fight with her friends like back in book 4 of the original BSC, what would she have done?...Until now! Now, Mary Anne will stand up to the meanest girl, or person, in all of SMS. I think that Ms. Martin has done a great job changing Mary Anne's personality. She hasn't changed her too much, but she hasn't changed her for the worst, either. I love how she has made Mary Anne deal with her break-up with Logan. It definitly seems real, especially for a sensitive person like Mary Anne. I went through a similar situation last year, and I know how hard it is to see your ex with another girl, especially when you are still good friends. I'm definitly gonna keep getting this series! Keep up the good work, Ann! =)

Thought provoking fantasy with an original premise, and an ending!

The Antarcticans is an absorbing science fiction/fantasy novel about a pastor who makes a deal with Satan in which Satan agrees to cure his son of his intractable childhood schizophrenia in exchange for the pastor's wife doing long term, cooperative classified biology research in Antarctica with the help of the alien residents. Does it sound kooky? Sure it does, but this author does a fantastic job of blending these seemingly diametrically opposing ideas to make a smooth, well balanced novel. The writing is easy to follow and unlike many science fiction authors, he doesn't invent a lot of nonsense words or insert a million characters that are impossible for the reader to keep track of.

I'm no science fiction reading expert, being a pretty new reader in this genre, but I would characterize this novel as being one of those in which the relationships between the characters are explored more than anything else. It is not one of those hard science fiction novels. It actually has little science at all. It's an interesting mix of fantasy and a bit of science fiction with a unique premise. It isn't a thriller; the writing was interesting enough to keep me reading, but it was pretty even throughout, with few highs and lows, so if you're looking for something to keep you on the edge of your seat, this isn't the book for you. If you're tired of the same old spaceship/orphaned warrior sci/fi fantasy routine, I encourage you to try this one. The best thing of all is that it's a standalone, short novel. (Yes, they actually STILL make standalone fantasy books nowadays!) It's around 300 pages, and at the end, the reader actually has answers and a resolution, instead of having to invest a lot of money and years of your life wondering what happened to this and that character in an endless series of sequels. Happy reading!

This book was brilliant. A smart

So I was eagerly awaiting James Suriano's next book and man, was it worth the wait! This book was brilliant. A smart, indepth story that challenges your mind and expands your thinking. The author is so very imaginative and creative, each character pulls you all in, their pain, joys and hard decisions become your own. This is a MUST MUST read for anyone looking for a new frontier. This guy really is the weaving Genesis.

It was well-worth the wait to read this book. A superb epic fantasy. It combined fantasy and sci fi to make an interesting and unique story in the wonderful setting of Antarctica. For a fantasy, the characters were well-developed , complex and very realistic. Lucifer was nothing like the Biblical Lucifer. I highly recommend this book.

Karen Hesse's novel (Feiwel & Friends, 2012) is a beautifully written tale of survival and friendship with impeccable character development. Jenna Lamia provides expert narration. Although this title is marketed as dystopian fiction, the defining characteristics typical to the genre never fully materialize. Radley and Celia escape threats far too easily, the turmoil described in the beginning only vaguely carries over throughout the remainder of the story, and the ending wraps up too neatly. Those expecting a lot of action will be bored. Still, this story will be enjoyed by younger audiences not quite ready for the genre's darker tales. A quietly powerful novel

This book was not what I was expecting. The premise is that the United States has gone crazy after an extremist party has come to power and the president has been assassinated, leaving one girl to set out on her own in a search for her parents and safety. This led me to expect more action and more politics, explaining how we got from our current world to the broken world of the future. Neither of those things was really present, though. Radley doesn't have a lot of encounters with the looters and vigilantes who are roaming the country, and the course of events leading up to the current state of affairs is never fully explained. We don't learn any details about how the American People's Party gained power in a political system that doesn't exactly favour third parties, for example.

None of that turned out to matter, though. What this book mainly is, is a quietly introspective look at the things that we value. And it works very well. Radley reflects on how her parents gave her everything she needed, and wishes deeply that she had shown more appreciation. She wonders how she can make a contribution to society. And she cautiously develops new relationships in a dangerous and unfamiliar world. Looking at the themes that are developed, and how Hesse manages to do it in a way that doesn't feel heavy-handed, I can understand why she's won a Newbery medal for her previous work.

This book also includes an element that I personally always love: setting up a home in an isolated place with minimal supplies, and developing it from a basic shelter where one struggles to survive to a comfortable place that really is a home. It reminds me of stories about homesteading, and the Boxcar Children, and people shipwrecked on desert islands. Again, the survival element is done quietly, without a lot of intense struggle, but I found it very satisfying all the same. This is a powerful book in its understated way.

Eerie and thought provoking scenario

Safekeeping is set in present day after the US government has become unstable and a new, military government takes over. The news we see every day about unstable governments in third world countries is suddenly the US and that eerie sense of the familiar really sets the tone for the whole story. Radley comes back from charity work in Haiti to find that things back home has deteriorated at a rapid rate. The story, told in small chunks of narrative, knits together a story of one teen girl who might have been just a tad spoiled and follows her journey back to her parents. The "what if" aspect f this book was very gripping and a little on the scary side, quite frankly. The entire first half of the book is Radley alone which drags it down just a bit, but the story gains some depth when Radley meets up with emotionally damaged refugee named Celia who provides some perspective to Radley's story.

I saw a lot of different themes running through this story. The first thing that struck me was Radley's development from a teen with the comfort that she will always have someone to rescue her into someone who must learn to rely on her own wits and resources. The second aspect of the story that I noticed was how fragile everything we have is in our lives. The government was fragile, the societal structure was fragile, lives were fragile but even with that realization, Radley and Celia discover that they are stronger and more resilient than they imagined. Where the strength of institutions failed, the desire of the individual to survive proved to be strongest of all. Despite their dire situation, they are still able to find kindness which gave a bleak situation a ray of hope that kept the story from becoming too downtrodden. Safekeepnig was a different kind of dystopian, for me. Radley was not going to overthrow the new government and save the day. Instead, she took the much more realistic journey towards rebuilding her life and discovering her own strength which was a story worth telling.

Who am I: I'm a college English instructor who also has a library science degree.

Why I chose this book: I read a Hesse work in library school, and this one seemed appealing.

My review:

With her parents', teachers' and school administrators' blessings, Radley has been working as a volunteer in an orphanage in post-earthquake Haiti. While she is in Haiti, the President is assassinated and the American People's Party takes over the government of the U.S. This new government comes down hard on the people; vigilante groups, police raids, and looting abound. Illnesses believed to have been conquered return because people are in close, unsanitary quarters.

Radley returns to her New England home town after she hears of what has happened, but her parents aren't at the airport to meet her. Her phone isn't working. Her credit card has been cancelled. She has none of the required travel papers. She walks to her own home and hides there for a time - scurrying into the attic at the sound of police - then decides that she must walk even farther: to Quebec.

Another young woman, Celia, has joined Radley, and they find an abandoned schoolhouse in Quebec to survive until things calm down in the US, if not forever. They are quietly helped by a benefactor known during most of the novel as Our Lady of the Barn.

Though this novel has political overtones, it is more about what Radley learns during her time on her own. She learns not to take her parents, or anything else, for that matter, for granted anymore, and the rather spoiled teenage girl who left for Haiti becomes a strong young woman. Readers will wonder when or if she will be reunited with her family.

This novel does not have as much about the political side as the publisher's plot summary suggests, but is actually about Radley's coming of age. The author's photos and hand-drawn map of the area take some thought to connect with the text, but they do add to it.

This work is written in first person from Radley's point of view, which makes readers see, feel, and hear even more what Radley is going through.

I read Hesse's Newbery winner OUT OF THE DUST as a library school assignment, and I liked SAFEKEEPING even better. I could see Hesse winning a Printz Award for this novel.

About the Author
Jennifer Bohnhoff is a middle school social studies teacher. She loves travel and history, so it should come as no surprise that many of her books are middle grade and young adult historical novels set in beautiful or interesting places. She also has written a few humorous contemporary novels and a few adult novels.

In addition to writing and teaching, she is a middle school cross country and track coach and she sings in the choir at Faith Lutheran Church. But what she loves most of all is helping people reach that "ah hah" moment when they suddenly understand the connections between themselves, the past, eternity, and the world around them. She tries to do this with music, movement, writing, teaching and simply living.

Mrs. Bohnhoff is the mother of three handsome men, the mother-in-law of two beautiful daughters and the grandmother of one very smart granddaughter with another on the way. She lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico with her husband and a petulant stinker of a cat who cares nothing for her writing.

Fun read with characters everyone can relate to. Tweet Sarts will make you laugh out loud!

It is not often anymore that you come across a contemporary book geared toward middle schoolers that is not only clean, but fun to read. This was one of the things I loved about Tweet Sarts. This book has characters that people of all ages will relate to. Our family laughed out loud while reading it, and are looking forward to more books about the Anderson Family. This one had a Valentine's Day/Love theme and would make a great gift for anyone in middle school, high school, or those who can look back with laughter at those awkward years.

Great MG book with lots of laughs!

Such a great MG book. I don't often get the chance to read MG books, so I wasn't sure what to expect. But this story has everything--humor, emotion, real life struggles, and a perfect little dab of romance. Both boys and girls will appreciate this book. I have to admit that I laughed aloud at several parts and made my husband read them as well. Definitely recommend!

Fun reading.

Although the main character Hec is a mid school student, I enjoyed following along as each Anderson family member also tackled their own age appropriate relationship uncertainties. A fun book for all ages.
