the author does a great job of setting up the mood in the temple

Third book in the series ramps up the tension from the previous one. We move on to the element of the first Guardian we met, Smoak, with the large temple in the middle of the desert. the author does a great job of setting up the mood in the temple. There is an eeriness in the ancient place and the tension increases as Orin progresses. It is well done and I enjoy the imagination of the trial for the heartstone as well. The climax speaks to the strength of the story as you root for our heroes but feel for the enemy.

Another great episode into Orin's quest. I look forward to the next couple and to see the finality of the series, another 2 or 3 books I would think.

Way to go Emma! We enjoyed reading your story and learning that piece of American history. Loved the encounter with the Indian tribe and the wonderful friendship between the girls from different background. Was indeed worried about Kadyn (even though he can be annoying at times) when he fell sick, and glad that he came through!

A wickedly clever menu

A wickedly clever menu makes this a dinner that shouldn't be missed. There are some familiar faces that add an extra layer of enjoyment for those that have read the other Lands of Loam books, but this is ultimately Aja's story and she shines. The book is polished and well-paced, but it's the carefully crafted knicks in the veneer that make it unique: our beloved characters are heroic and beautiful, but they have their ugly moments, too, and this is even easier to see from the perspective of an outsider. Unlike some other books where an orphan is delivered from terrible circumstances by virtue of being the protagonist and bathed in sympathy and opportunities, nothing is handed to Aja, which, of course, means we get to see her fight all the harder for what she does get!

It was fun trying to figure out each course along with the characters. One thing that stood out to me is that rather than rushing toward a climax, the tension increased in measured steps along with each course, which was fitting. There was suspense, but there was also time to savor the dangerous wonders, and oh goodness, was the food wonderful! It's like walking through Willie Wonka's chocolate factory except twice as deadly and with more enjoyable company. A thoroughly enjoyable book altogether.

I honestly don't understand what A.E. Marling has done to me; I have some sort of compulsion now to read all of his work. It' started back with Fox's Bride. Perhaps there's a spell on the pages?
Anyway, Magic Banquet is a another lovely, lush, luxurious, luminous, languishing piece of luminescent literature that satisfies while simultaneously leaving you wanting one....tiny.....more...bite.
It's characters are well honed, it's environs are beautifully articulated, and the story arc is glorious.
Please tell the Lord to stick around a bit longer.

About the Author

S. B. Hibbard knows what it’s like to be the new girl in class. Growing up in a military family, she experienced it eight times in her first twelve years of school.

Hibbard went on to teach after earning her psychology degree at Duke University. She has been a classroom teacher in several grades and also an itinerant teacher of gifted students, working with students in different schools. She knows what it’s like to teach a group of exceptional students like those who star in her book, Misfits of Blue Moon.

Her short fiction has been published in literary magazines, and she has also had creative curriculum work published by McDonald Publishing.

Hibbard currently lives in St. Louis, Missouri, with her husband.

Wish I could have had read this in fourth grade!

I loved this book. It grabbed me immediately and dropped me back into the world of grade school with all the classroom issues that come with a new place. Eliza reminds me of myself at that age. She has an insatiable curiosity and creativity, but lacks the self confidence to enjoy them, until… Mrs. Peach!!! Oh how I wish I had been delivered to such a teacher! S.B. Hibbard has created an authentic experience for child and adult readers alike with historical facts the reader gobbles up as he/she journeys through a mystery and vicariously tries to survive one of those unhappy teachers most of us have suffered at one time or another while running the gauntlet of teachers’ pets. I am sending copies of this book to grandchildren today!

This is a great story for kids of all ages! It is one of the favorite books of my kids - ages 10 and 12 - and would be perfect for younger advanced readers as well. Eliza is a smart sympathetic heroine who deals with one of the worst teachers in literary history with grit and determination - and solves a fun interesting mystery to boot! Your kids will love this book!

This an entertaining story from the developer of whole body listening.A great story for home and the classroom. The characters are sure to delight as well as teach children about how to truly listen. By the way, I love the teacher's name, Miss Bun E. Hare. Yes she is a rabbit! Susanne Poulette is one creative author.

About the Author
Kenneth Grahame was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on March 8, 1859. He worked at the Bank of England while writing in his spare time, authoring several books before achieving success with The Wind in the Willows in 1908. The book was inspired by bedtime stories that Grahame told to his son, Alastair. He also wrote The Reluct-ant Dragon, which was much later adapted into a Disney film. He ceased writing after Alastair's death in 1920 and died in Pangbourne, England, on July 6, 1932.

A Personal Favourite

This book is a personal favourite of mine, and one that I never get tired of reading, and I know that I am not the only adult that has read it many times, and will continue to do so. Great for children as well this is something that you can read to them in instalments, and when they are old enough, they can then read themselves.

Published over a hundred years ago, rather like JK Rowling and her Harry Potter books this was turned down by a number of publishers, and when it was eventually published received some quite snooty reviews from critics. However despite this this was a hit with the public, and has remained so, and it is easy to see why.

This isn’t perfect by any means and reading it you do soon realise that the animal characters change size on a number of occasions, from their normal animal size, to being larger and coming into contact with humans. They even have money, after all Mr Toad can buy anything he seemingly wants and lives in a hall.

As Mole leaves his home for a look outside on a glorious spring morning so he comes into contact with Ratty, and the two are soon firm friends. With Badger, who Ratty already knows, Mole makes another new friend, and also with Toad. But with all the comedy and incident here it is Toad that captures everyone’s imagination. He is conceited and really to a certain extent obnoxious but we can’t help but root for him as he goes to prison, escapes and then finds out that Toad Hall is being squatted in by stoats and weasels.

Creating a world that has many similarities with the real one at that period, this is a tale that keeps us all enthralled as we read of the many exploits and adventures that happen here, as well as the more sedate side of life, with relaxing and taking meals with friends. Always a treat to read there is one thing here that you end up saying and can’t help yourself when you get into a car, and that is Toad’s saying of ‘Poop! Poop!’ Don’t worry it does wear off after a few days, but the next time you read the book it happens again.

Even more than Alice and Wonderland, this classic book written for young people is in glorious english with every word precisely chosen and superb sentance structure . During the book Kenneth Graham teaches the reader good manners and good characteristics in animals and people almost in a Kipling fashion . probably the most delightful book that anyone could hope to read

...but with nearly a dozen illustrated versions for the same price point I'm going to have to purchase an alternate version as while I can see these forest creatures in my head, I keep thinking how much more I'd like this book were it illustrated. Still a good book by Xist if you can do without the artwork.

Excellent Read!

Once again, Esha Bajaj has delivered a beautifully written story, with phrases and descriptions that paint vivid pictures and conjure up haunting images. The Shards of the Heart is a fast-paced read that explores the continuing saga of betrayal between two sisters and their intertwined fates. This book picks back up right where The Essence of Aptitude left off, and provides more clues about the characters' pasts and how the circumstances of their social rank affect their relationships, ambitions and motivations to succeed.

This book is charged with suspense, action and even tenderness amid the chaos of the world in which its set. Another wonderful read from Bajaj; I couldn't put it down, and can't wait to read the next book in the series!

Great book for the child who loves horses

I find the Pocket Genius books to be perfect for the grab-and-go situation. For example, you know you will have to drive long distance with the kids in the car. Who likes a child who complains while driving for an extended period of time. I remember when I was about seven years old that my mom had packed a special basket for me as we drove to Florida. When we drove back home, the things in the basket were changed in order to entertain me. These books are perfect for this kind of situation because they are small, don't take a lot of space and contains educational information in them. They can be easily slip into a backpacks and will appeal even kids in middle school. These book contain facts and information on specific subjects that could be interesting for kids.

HORSES
This specific title features more than 125 individual breeds of horses, ponies and their cousins -- zebras, mules and donkeys. It will present the horse in details base don the color, markings, the horse family and the type of horse. It will also present ponies, light horses, heavy horses as well as other information like the anatomy and the behavior of horses at work and at play. Stunning images will illustrate what the book is presenting. At the end of the book, you will be able to read fun facts about horses. It's a good book for basic horse information.

For my purposes using this book to teach a brief reading lesson to elementary age students this book worked well. I chose the I like it rating because the information was correct and it suited my purposes. However, as an equine professional, I noticed that though technically correct some of the terminology is currently not widely used in America, at least in my primary breed and area in the Mid-Atlantic region. Little things like calling all chestnut colored horses sorrels instead of chestnut and not mentioning that the two colors can be interchangeable is not major but as an equine horsemanship instructor I like precision in my terminology and teach my students the multiple common terms within the industry for clarification.

Nina, Oswald and Ivy enter a different world whilst they are visiting the Lost Bookshop. They meet a witch, have a spell put on them and find themselves in the middle of a magical situation in which there is a race against time to get out of. The story is fast paced, exciting and entertaining.
The book introduces the characters in a quirky, magical, setting (the bookshop). The three children are believable, full of character and have realistic friendships and bickering. Nina’s Uncle and Aunty’s magical rambling bookshop is an excellent portal from which adventures can spring. I enjoyed the way that the book talk to the reader at times during the story and the imaginative humour and excitement throughout the story. This is the first book I have read in the ‘Lost Bookshop Adventures’ series and I will certainly look for more. Highly recommended.

Delightful and Nostalgic!

Fantastic! I read primarily Literary fiction and downloaded this out of curiosity. I was laughing so hard, I almost injured myself on my treadmill. It is delightful, like a fresh cupcake with sprinkles. If your children enjoy fairy tales, this is a must read. Some of the dialogue was so funny. The narrator talking to the reader was not distracting. It gave a nostalgic, warm feeling. Cannot say enough how much fun this is!

I am an elementary school teacher in Southern California where the social studies curriculum for 4th graders focuses on California history - notably the cultures of various Native American tribes that lived here for thousands of years before the arrival of Catholic Missionaries, Russian fur traders, and finally Europeans and Asians who stormed the state during the Gold Rush. Each of these groups profoundly impacted the world of California's Native Americans - but school children often come away from 4th grade thinking that the original people in their state are merely part of the past. This gem of a children's novel not only makes clear to young readers that local Native Americans are alive, well, and cherishing their own languages/traditions/beliefs/myths among the rest of us but also ties a present-day young girl's life on a reservation to that of the Native woman who lived alone on San Nicolas Island for 18 years old. Karana, as the island woman has become known thanks to Scott O'Dell's renowned children's novel Island of the Blue Dolphins, was ultimately brought to the mainland where she struggled to share her language and her people's songs with those who would listen. The protagonist in Dear Miss Karana, Tishmal, establishes a connection with Karana through the living traditions and vibrant language of her own tribe. Mr. Elliott has done a lovely job tying the past to the present and bringing them both alive for today's young readers.

And as a bonus, students can view the entire text - for free - in the language of Tishmal's people, the Luiseno tribe.

I just finished reading Island of the Ble Dolphins to my fourth grade class and happened across this title. I was intrigued and I received it as a birthday present and I loved it! I plan on reading this book to my students when we come back from Christmas break. The language is easy and kid friendly but what I found invaluable is that it provides a glimpse into the life of a present day Native American girl. Most students are not aware that there are still Native Americans living among us or that they continue to practice their customs and traditions. I am excited about sharing this book with my students. I especially liked the glossary to help with pronouncing the Luiseno words that are sprinkled throughout the text.

Dear Miss Karana is a sweet but very important novel that I recommend highly for programming and curricula designed for Indigenous youth. I will certainly implement this book into programming for the Native youth I work with, but I think it would serve any schools and classrooms well, especially those in California. (Perhaps a unit on Dear Miss Karana could replace the often problematic Mission projects we endure in California elementary schools?!)
The epistolary form of the book makes it excellent to read aloud (It took me about an hour and a half to read the whole book out loud). Tíshmal is a wonderful, bright character and her use of the Luiseño language (Chamtéela) is inspiring to me as a Luiseńo descendant and language learner. I believe reading this book as a class, after-school program, or as a family will generate important conversations about the often overlooked or purely historicized Indigenous context of California, the role of elders and community, and the importance of Indigenous language revitalization.
Reading Dear Miss Karana was a very special experience. My only complaint is that it wasn't written 20 years earlier so I could have read it as a little girl! noşúun lóoviq, Eric Elliot, for this important contribution to the growing body of literature for Indigenous youth.
