A Must Read for parents!

We've done our share of home improvements over the years. Each one always brought hope for our home to be a place of comfort and invitation for our family. We also had to protect our investment over the years which required maintenance type projects like a new roof or siding or windows.

I love watching the home improvement shows but something funny begins to stir in me after a while - - discontent. If not careful, I can begin to look around and see what room should be painted a different color, flooring should be switched out or worse yet, bathroom should be redone. And truly, nothing needs to be improved at our home at this time.

In her book, Raising Grateful Kids in an Entitled World, Kristen Welch hits it on the head:

And as uncomfortable as it sounds, parents who want less-entitled kids have to be less entitled themselves, and parents who want to raise more grateful kids need to start by living more grateful lives. (page 11)

Media has increasingly made it difficult to be content with what we have, where we are, and who we are. Commercials drive us to get the next new product in the hopes of being able to be successful and achieve our dreams. Along with eroding our contentment, we are driven to get it quickly, now.

My children are grown adults, now raising their own children. I pray we, as their parents, raised them to work hard and to be grateful for what they have been given. But only time will truly tell if they learned the lesson and are able to resist the pull which surrounds them.

Kristen readily admits she is not a child psychologist but a parent facing the same challenges as us all. You may not agree with everything she shares as she surely goes against the "norm", which will require courage, but you will be left to think about yourself and parenting. Your eyes will be opened to the slow erosion occurring not only in children but in our own hearts as well. She addresses topics such as:

wants vs. needs
changing times
self-centerness
technology and setting boundaries
cultivating obedience in our children
disciplining with love and grace
developing gratitude
ways to implement change (in ourselves and our children)

At the end of each chapter, she makes suggestions which she breaks down into age appropriate stages - toddlers/preschoolers, elementary, tweens /teens, and parents. These suggestions will assist parents in making the small changes, along each stage of life, to continually teach our children to embrace gratitude. These can be tweaked to suit your own family and children. She also includes:

a cell phone contract between parent and child
a Christian parent manifesto
a list of recommended resources

This is a must read book for every parent to inspire us to save our families from becoming selfish and self-centered. We can turn the hearts of our children back towards God and gratitude. May we start with changing ourselves first. This book makes for an excellent small group study as there also is a discussion guide.

Eye opening!

I bought this book on a whim. Another homeschooling mom had told me about the blog We are THAT family. I liked what I saw and the author released this book 2 days later. To be honest, like others probably, I bought this thinking I was going to find out how to fix my kids. My husband and I are in a battle against entitlement with our kids daily it seems. Instead what I am getting out of this book is so much more! I am not figuring how to fix my kids, but how to fix myself! I find myself constantly reading it out loud with my husband and discussing many of the issues presented in this book. It has really made us stop and think about ourselves and how we parent. It is revolutionizing our lives! We have already started making small changes in our home. I highly recommend to anyone with kids of any age or if you are preparing to start a family.

Heavy Religious Overtones - not necessarily bad, but perhaps a bit misleading

I am really struggling with this book; I was encouraged by the title and thought that me and my family would benefit from what I was led to believe it covered .... that being said, I think that the description of the book should be more up front about the religious right leaning agenda that this book appears to have. I could have done more research to learn about the author, but there was nothing in the title or description that would have led me to think that this was the tone of the book. That is wonderful that they are a Christian family, as is my own, but I am not looking for the author's commentary and opinions on Chris Jenner, gay marriage, etc. when what I am really seeking is practical guidance on raising grateful kids.

Fun and Informative Read!!

This is such a fascinating and fun read. Last year in our homeschool we covered Spartacus, Cleopatra, Martin Luther, Koxinga and Mary, Queen of Scots. With the arrival of Fantastic Fugitives, we have been revisiting these in our spare time to learn even more. The humor and sarcasm that the author adds to the stories makes it more interesting and hard to put down. I could easily knock this book out in a couple of days, but with reading it along with my third grader we take our time. I don't want to overwhelm him with too much information and him get it all jumbled together.

I haven't checked out the other book in this series (Famous Phonies), but it's on my list to purchase. Without a doubt, I'm sure my 8-year old will love it!

Approachable, amusing, and educational!

This book is intended for kids ages 10-14, but I really enjoyed it as well! The stories are presented in an informal manner with funny comments, lots of graphics and definitions of phrases that may be unfamiliar. The author does a great job of making the characters in this book seem like real, living people, not just a famous name. This book makes history fun and approachable and isn't at all dry or boring.

Even better than the first one!

I really liked the first book in this series, Famous Phonies, but this book is actually better. It still has the quirky concept and tone that makes reading the stories and learning the histories fun. But the chapters in this book are a little tighter, and there's a better mix of men and women. I'd highly recommend it for any history loving kid or reluctant reader.

About the Author

Faye Kapoor is a mother of two beautiful daughters. During her childhood in India, she enjoyed reading books by Enid Blyton and Agatha Christie, as well as the Sherlock Holmes series. She has spent her career in engineering, earning a doctorate and working for several years in industry.

What a delightful little book! Follow along with a great cast of characters (hawks, spiders, ants, bees) as they learn about life and living. Ends with a sweet and nostalgic story about a young woman and the special time spent with her Dad when she was a little girl. Adorable illustrations by the author's young daughters make it seem like the book was written for you by a friend. Quick, short reads with meaningful insights. Brief notes at the end of the stories provide facts about the animal and insect characters.

We loved this book. The gift had me tearing up, thinking of my son leaving for college someday (he is only six, but...). The story that my son and I liked the best was about Little Stripe. Lovely story, we both learned something about bees. And good ethics, Little Stripe could be a little soldier doing his PhD, or something for long-haul, a dedicated person making up the gaps by self-learning! And we learned about Spiders and Hawks.Thanks. My son was asking for more and more. We want more

Loved it!

Loved this story! My daughter, 8 years old, also really liked it and could totally relate to the characters. She thought it was very good and told me the lesson, no problem. I love the illustrations! They resemble both my daughters which made this book even better for us, it was like it was written especially for them! Would highly recommend! I received this story for an honest review!

My 6 year old and I loved reading this book together. It is very cleverly written to make one appreciate the merits of having a sister. The illustrations are great too. We received a review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, but this is definitely a book that we would choose at a bookstore based on the fun story and cute illustrations.

Not What I Expected

I am a fan of Lisa Nichols. I was happy to learn that she had released a new book. So I purchased it. But honestly, I would not recommend it for everyone.

The book is marketed as creating abundance in your life which is what I was looking for when I purchased this book, but it seems to be more about creating an abundance of money in your life. She has some interesting ideas to share about that. I especially appreciated when she said that she has learned to look at money as a team member. I like that. I never looked at money in that way but it makes sense.

She also states in the book that abundance isn't necessarily about having wealth, but then goes on to say that the best definition of abundance that she heard states that abundance means "privileged circumstances" which (paraphrasing) allows one to live a jet-set lifestyle that others longingly admire.

The book also has plenty of story-telling about her wealth and the wealth of her friends added perhaps as inspiration to those who seek that level of prosperity.

I did enjoy the section on repairing relationships.

If I were just starting my adult life and if my goal was to become very wealthy, perhaps this book would be more useful to me as one in a collection of books on wealth-building.

Again, I'm a fan of Lisa Nichols. I absolutely LOVE her book, "No Matter What!: 9 Steps to Living the Life You Love". It's a very practical book that many will gain value from.

This particular book, I believe, is targeted to the specific segment of the population who would also be interested in books such as Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich (Start Motivational Books).
