Employing an informal tone, DuMont presents figures such as Nelson Mandela and Cleopatra, with results that are entertaining but less than credible, despite the solid list of sources. Because of her fictionalizing and informal tone, the prose is sometimes off-putting "[Martin Luther] returned to Germany in more personal turmoil than when he farted a lot," which makes the work unsuitable for report use. The layout is appealing, with colorful images, glossy pages, and pop-out highlighted definitions and facts. Brianna DuMont is author of the Changed History series, which makes history come alive by exposing its murky underbelly. The first book in the series, Famous Phonies: Legends, Fakes and Frauds who Changed History, includes gems about “I-must-not-tell-a-lie” George Washington and school-less Shakespeare. When she’s not writing quirky books, Brianna travels the world in search of great museums and historical sites. When she’s at home, she is a full-time writer and researcher who is quickly becoming best friends with her local librarian. She lives in Chicago, Illinois with her husband, daughter, and two hyperactive kitties.

Fun and Informative Read!!

This is such a fascinating and fun read. Last year in our homeschool we covered Spartacus, Cleopatra, Martin Luther, Koxinga and Mary, Queen of Scots. With the arrival of Fantastic Fugitives, we have been revisiting these in our spare time to learn even more. The humor and sarcasm that the author adds to the stories makes it more interesting and hard to put down. I could easily knock this book out in a couple of days, but with reading it along with my third grader we take our time. I don't want to overwhelm him with too much information and him get it all jumbled together.
I haven't checked out the other book in this series (Famous Phonies), but it's on my list to purchase. Without a doubt, I'm sure my 8-year old will love it!

Approachable, amusing, and educational!

This book is intended for kids ages 10-14, but I really enjoyed it as well! The stories are presented in an informal manner with funny comments, lots of graphics and definitions of phrases that may be unfamiliar. The author does a great job of making the characters in this book seem like real, living people, not just a famous name. This book makes history fun and approachable and isn't at all dry or boring.

Even better than the first one!

I really liked the first book in this series, Famous Phonies, but this book is actually better. It still has the quirky concept and tone that makes reading the stories and learning the histories fun. But the chapters in this book are a little tighter, and there's a better mix of men and women. I'd highly recommend it for any history loving kid or reluctant reader.
