Love this book

Love the story of the quiet man who eventually lets his inner artistic self rise to the challenge of his art car. This will encourage kids to seek their inner artistic self in their own way and that it is okay to be different and to express themselves however they feel. Illustrations are great with the black and white with the color mixed it, great idea to get focus on a specific point. Great job by Cathey to teach kids to use their imagination to create beautiful artful things.

I enjoyed the storyline creativity as it continued to build up using a true-life event ... Art Cars. The author, Cathy Graham Nickell, does a great job of incorporating imagination and education (using the alphabet as a means to chose the objects Arthur uses to decorate his once ordinary car). Nice to see the ordinary turn into extraordinary (as this happens to both Arthur ... and to his amazing car too).

When I saw the first picture my heart jumped for joy at the quality of the illustration. I then hoped the story wouldn’t disappoint and it didn’t. The language is flowing and gentle and carries you along nicely. It also gave me a chuckle on a couple of occasions. While Arthur Zarr watches the community around him busily getting on and enjoying life, he himself is quiet and lonely and noticed by no one – until he acts on a creative impulse and starts jazzing up his plain looking car by sticking an acorn on it. True to the proverb ‘from little acorns grow mighty trees’ big changes happen in Arthur’s life. He eventually finds himself growing in confidence, building friendships and partaking in community activities for himself. The illustrations are of a very high standard and they match the story’s theme perfectly, namely that some things in Arthur’s life are plain and colourless (he has no friends and watches life go by). While at other times things become more brightly coloured and vivid. The story is excellent for using in the classroom as a discussion point for themes such as loneliness and how sharing with others can make people feel better. It’s also valuable for introducing children to the idea of our need to be proactive in order to be part of a community and make friends. The book is also valuable for highlighting the role played by art and creativity for changing lives for the better. When it eventually dawned on me that each object stuck on Arthur’s car started with a letter of the alphabet, the book’s ingenuity went up a notch in my estimation. The colourful pictures and true-to-life everyday activities that Arthur partakes in could easily hold the attention of the younger age group as well as engaging older children. Overall, a very nice book to add to the book shelf to help inspire creativity from an early age. Well done to both author and illustrator.

Having just bought this eBook, I haven't really gotten around to reading the whole thing, so I'll be doing this review on just Chapter 1.
The beginning is quite amazing. The vivid imagery allows the reader to faintly imagine what is happening, though it is at the same time so vague that it causes us to wonder what is even going on. The author, in addition, slowly reveals more clues about the scene, and we as the reader gradually comprehend the story. I feel this high degree of mysterious-ness is what makes this story so unique.
Moreover, a few potential motifs are mentioned in this first chapter. These universal ideas allow the reader to connect more deeply to the story, as they teach us several lessons to be remembered in life. I cannot say though as to the development of these motifs obviously, as I have only read a small portion of the story, but I am definitely excited to get to the rest.

Finding Clementia is an exceptionally profound and poignant read. It touches on inherent human qualities such as selfishness, love, retribution, and eventual forgiveness.

I was fascinated in the contrast between the two protagonists. One is the follower of a fictional cult with deep faith and a strong sense of justice. She is betrayed by her partner in crime, but then reunited with him. Together they go on a journey to find her father. For the sake of avoiding spoilers, I won't elaborate more on the actual plot. What was heart-wrenching, though, was her constant struggle between forgiveness and revenge, grace and wrath.

Clementia is the titular character, and the main character in the modern world. She's fairly simple as a character--straight A high school student, middle class, single child, parents on the verge of divorce. What's interesting about her, however, is the meaning of her name. I looked it up, and it turns out that 'Clementia' means 'forbearance.' Along the same lines, her father's name, 'Nepios,' means 'unenlightened' or 'immature.'

Besides overarching themes of forgiveness and faith, I loved the alternating story-line aspect of Finding Clementia. Nearly every chapter alternates between the ancient world and the modern world, with sleep as transitions. We don't know which is the dream, and which is real, and the author keeps us guessing until the very end.

A very pure, deep romance also slowly blossoms throughout the story, transcending the worlds and tying together the story in a satisfactory yet thought-provoking ending.
A must read.

This little book is about the passion and imagination of a child.  Many of the books I create in my photography studio have that in common; celebrating that time in our young lives where anything is possible and no questions are asked when something magical happens.The illustrations for this book began as photographs of my creation, which I have stylized into a painterly feel for this publication.  The family has the original untouched in a hard-bound copy that they can pass down through the generations.Just imagine when this little girl is reading this book to her own granddaughter, and telling her, "yes, this is Gramma in the pictures as a little girl, and this here is a picture that comes from a carved wooden mermaid that MY grandmother had at her house.  I would look at it and imagine magical things".We've decided to publish this delightful story so that other young children can imagine themselves in Allie's dream come true adventure.Warmly,Bonnie

Bonnie St.Pierre has been a professional photographer for over 30 years, specializing in storytelling portraits of children and families, interacting together in moments captured that often have an element of play and make-believe making the possible.As a result, she has spent numerous hours with children from infancy to teens, playing and drawing out their personalities for the images she creates for them.The experience has allowed her abundant access to the playground of a child's mind over and over again.  This, and drawing on her own experience as an enthusiastic reader since first introduction to books as a very young child, Bonnie knows how to tell a story that delights, for all ages.

It Has Drawn Me In

Suspenseful and engrossing, "He Has Walled Me In" is an engaging novella set on Mars early in its colonization. It establishes the protagonist Leon, a colonist suffering from a debilitating illness and the primary conflict comes about in short order. It explores themes of isolation, survivors guilt, retribution and mercy in a brisk 48 pages. I would recommend to any fan of hard science fiction.

Though the day guardians won and imprisoned Loki, the battle left these mighty figures exhausted and nearly powerless. A prophecy issued by the head god, Odin, predicted that Loki and the day guardians would face off again. In order to better their chances, the guardians deposited their powers into a collection of stones known as the Runes of Valhalla, and allowed their sleeping souls to travel down the bloodlines of their most faithful followers. The day guardians now rest in an enchanted sleep within these “host” bodies.

After the encounter with Sunna things start to get a little odd like the same Saturday replays over and over for them but something is a little off with each day after the first. The only way to fix everything is to free the day guardians by collecting all the runes and to stop Loki before it’s too late.
Buzz with the help of Mary set out to collect the runes but are quickly joined by Theo one of the boys in school who’s caused trouble for Buzz in the past. They are also joined by Buzz’s Uncle Mark who happened to have a couple of the runes that had ended up at the police station. They learn that Mark and Theo are hosts for the day guardians but without the correct rune the guardian is suppressed. They travel the different worlds searching for the runes before Loki can get them. Do they have what it takes to beat Loki or will they be too late?
I like Buzz and Mary they work well together even when you add in Theo as well as Uncle Mark. It’s been a while since I’ve read a middle grade book but the characters felt more mature than I had expected but I really like it. I felt that I was really able to connect with Buzz as well as Mary. I wasn’t sure about Theo because he started out not a nice guy but at the book progressed he redeemed himself. It’s interesting seeing how the day guardian’s took over their host bodies when the time came.
My husband happened to be looking over my shoulder while I was checking out the new books on Edelweiss when I happened to land on this one. He instantly said he wanted to read it which is code for I’ll read and it and when he has time he’ll read it too. I typically don’t read a lot of Middle grade novels because sometimes they feel very immature but this one worked out better than I expected. The concept for the day guardians with the runes is very interesting and I enjoyed reading about the Norse gods because I don’t know much about them. I also liked that it’s not so much Thor is the main god but the other’s all have an important role in the story. While I haven’t read a Rick Riordan novel I am familiar with them and would suggest Secrets of Valhalla for any fans. This is my first novel by the author but I think she did a great job creating a captivating story kids as well as adults will enjoy.

A winking coming of age story

This is part of what I think of as "mythology fan fiction" along the lines of Rick Riordan. However, unlike those releases, this one combines deities from both Norse and Roman legends.

Of course Loki plays a huge role in the mischief, but he doesn't play quite the role you think. And while some of the plot points will be predictable for older readers, I was genuinely surprised and in many places touched by Richards' insights. I also chuckled over how she has some of the gods adapt to modern circumstances. Oh, those clever gods...

The quest of the two main characters is the real draw though. Both are easy to relate to in their own ways: Buzz, the Every Boy who can't relate to his father and Mary, the awkward, perpetual new kid who has to hide what makes her unique in order to survive. You quickly root for the both of them even when they're in conflict.

Not everything worked perfectly, but what didn't stuck out because most of it worked so well. The end wraps up very nicely.

I'd happily read more from Richards.

So simple, yet extremely informative.

Fantastic Book. The author does a great job breaking things down and making it really easy to understand how to transform your eating and in turn your overall health. Ran straight to the store and overhauled my pantry right after reading a few sections. Bye bye noodle soup... good riddance. Excited for any future releases by this author!

Not the end of the world for $4 but was hoping for something better since our son LOVES monster trucks

First the book is cut wrong, the pages stick out from under the thick cardboard cover. And the story is just awful, it goes from rhyming to not rhyming its difficult to read and become animated with my son because the story is so choppy and weird. who writes this stuff?

Very poorly written. Not a good learning tool; no rhyme scheme, no alliteration, no word visualization tools and contains some words that require a 3rd grade reading level. My 2.5 year old who loves being read to and is obsessed with monster trucks was not interested.

Monster trucks

I used this book for one of my students who has an interest in "monster trucks". He is an ELL (English Language Learner) in second grade. He was so surprised and excited that I listened to what interests him by acquiring some "monster truck" books for a class lesson. It was gratifying for me to see and hear him read something that he really loves. The book was perfect to work on increasing his reading level and verbal fluency, as well as exploring new vocabulary words within the text.
