About the Author
Joe Giorello teaches a highly popular class for boys called “Great Battles." Part of a large Italian family in Queens, New York, Joe heard firsthand stories of relatives who served in World War II and Vietnam. Their experiences sparked his love of history and spurred him to study military history. As both a teacher and an author, Joe’s goal is to show young people how exciting history can be. Amazing Book!!

I just finished reading this amazing book. I believe this book was written for young adult boys; however, I am a 70-year-old woman and I thought it was great. I learned and re-learned so much about the many battles in the Pacific area during World War II. My understanding is that this author, Joe Giorello, teaches "Battles for Boys." If I had a teacher and book like this when I was young I know I would have enjoyed history much more than I did. Basically, I remember having to learn and remember dates of battles more than what they were about.
There are a lot of gruesome descriptions in this book about the conditions our military faced while fighting, including how POWs were treated and mis-treated, but I believe that is a necessary and important part of the stories. Kids today playing video games have a lot of fun shooting up the enemy. This book teaches them that war is in no way fun.
Now I'm looking forward to reading Great Battles for Boys: WW2 in Europe by the same author, which I ordered both in book format as well as the Kindle format. The author lists websites and YouTube sites at the ends of many of the stories. With this book in Kindle format you can just click on the web sites or You-Tube sites listed and you are taken directly to them. He also lists movies that have been made of some of the battles. I bought the books in paperback so that I can pass them on to my grandsons AFTER I read them.
Please give these books a read, no matter what age you are. The author of these books does an amazing job of telling the stories of war.

Excellent, Engaging Read for All Readers. Great Battles for Boys is Great American History. Period.

Just as the author did with his Great Battles for Boys, WW2 in Europe, he scores a huge success for me and, I suspect, readers of all ages and both sexes, with Great Battles for Boys, WW2 in the Pacific. Read on to learn why.

Doris “Dorrie” Miller was collecting laundry on the USS West Virginia when an alarm sounded. It was the morning of December 7, 1941. Miller headed for his mid-ship battle station, at an antiaircraft battery magazine.
But a Japanese torpedo had already wrecked the gun.
So Miller ran on deck.
A former boxing champion, and among the few black Americans in the navy, Miller was ordered to carry wounded sailors to safety. But later another officer ordered him to the bridge—the ship’s command center—because the captain was badly wounded. After taking care of the captain, Miller manned a 50-caliber Browning anti-aircraft machine gun. Though not trained to operate the powerful gun...

...He was aboard an American escort carrier on November 24, 1942 when a Japanese submarine fired a single torpedo. The bomb detonated in the ship’s magazine, sinking the vessel. Dorrie Miller was listed among the 646 American sailors who died on that ship.

The marines and paramarines who fought at Guadalcanal were among the finest soldiers America has ever produced, including Marine Sgt. John Basilone.
When Japanese grenades and mortar fire reduced his fifteen-man unit to two, Basilone moved an extra gun into position, manning it himself while he repaired the damaged gun. Almost single-handedly, Basilone held the line until replacements arrived.
When the Japanese cut off the supply lines and ammunition was running low, Basilone fought his way—once again under continual fire—through enemy lines to bring shells to his gunners. When the smoke cleared, Basilone’s platoon had stopped an entire Japanese regiment. More than 300 enemy soldiers lay dead.
Basilone was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
Later, he would also receive the Navy Cross, the only enlisted Marine to receive both medals during World War II.
[Providing these bits, including photos of the people, is a fabulous way to bring them to life for the reader, and is a great dedication to their memories. I especially appreciated the tribute to a brave black sailor, Dorrie Miller.

A terrific, engaging read not merely for our boys or girls to get them engaged in history and in reading. This is a book suitable for all ages.

Bite-sized history for active boys

My 11-year-old son received this as a birthday gift. He says, "It's a good book and great summer reading. It's a great bedtime story. I learned a lot about World War 2 in the Pacific."
Joe is my son's history teacher at our homeschool co-op. They're studying the Civil War this year. Next year my son will be learning about battles throughout history from Joe. The chapters are short enough for a single sitting and involve one campaign. There's also a section in each chapter subtitled, "Who Fought", which focuses on one real person in that campaign, often including quotes from that person or someone who witnessed the event.
