Heartwarming Stories for Catholic Children!
By Therese Heckenkamp
"Animals of God (Volume 1)" by Susan Peek was a pure pleasure to read with my children! We read the book at bedtime over the course of numerous nights, but my 7-year-old couldn’t wait for me to finish, so he finished it on his own—and that kind of eagerness speaks for itself!
Such heartwarming, wondrous, and hope-filled stories are a rare kind of inspiring in today’s modern world. The stories are creatively told in engaging, kid-friendly language—from the animal’s points of views—which really makes the tales come alive. There’s also plenty of action to keep kids glued to the pages.
Enriched by charming illustrations, this unique and delightful collection includes three stories about three different animals:
1. Little lamb longs for more than his boring everyday routine. One wondrous night, he witnesses an incredible star in the sky . . . and finds a joy and contentment to last forever.
2. Joshua the mule, whose master suddenly stops feeding him for three whole days, is driven by hunger—until, transfixed by a little white Host, he becomes part of a miracle.
3. A baby deer, lost in a storm, finds a holy man living in a cave, and they become the best of friends, but will they be separated by tragedy? Or will a heart-pounding woodland chase reveal immeasurable mercy and love in a most mysterious way?
With three complete stories and bonus coloring pages, you can’t beat the value of this book. But the biggest value is in the impact these stories will have on our children’s faith, imparting an innocent love of God to last a lifetime. What a fun and memorable way to bring Catholic truths to life for little ones!
"Animals of God" is sure to impress minds, hearts, and souls in the very best way. It is simple yet profound. It is thoroughly and traditionally Catholic. This is THE Easter gift to give to all the Catholic children in your life. Readers will be eager for more—and won’t be disappointed, because Volume 2 is coming soon!

A Perfect Gift the Catholic Child
By Lindens
I had the pleasure of reading Susan Peek’s newest release, Animals of God, Volume 1. Because of her active writing style, I enjoy Peek’s books for teens, but this is my first experience reading one of her children’s stories. Reading this made me wish for little ones in the house so I could read the sweet stories to them!
Peek’s clever use of personification, telling these stories from the animals’ points of view, brings different facets of our faith down to a child’s level. Children will be able to relate to the feelings of the animals in these stories: the bored little lamb who felt that “Every day is the same as yesterday,” the hungry mule who didn’t quite understand what the big people were up to, and the scared little fawn who got lost during a storm.
The simple vocabulary makes the stories easy to understand and enjoy. The setting details and imagery Peek uses will draw young readers deeper into the story, speak to their imagination, and stir their little hearts. But I really appreciate the message of each story, messages that will appeal to a child’s sense of awe and have them appreciating the Blessed Mother, the saints, and the Blessed Sacrament in deeper ways.
I also must mention…I appreciate good artwork in children’s stories, and the pictures in this book do not disappoint. Every picture has so many details that I found myself stopping to study each one. Detailed and playful, the expertly drawn pictures in this book help make the stories come alive. Children will love the coloring pages in the back!
The author and I are members of the Catholic Writers Guild. I love her work! I read an online version of the book and received nothing in exchange for my honest review.

The Little Lamb’s Wish - little lamb is wishing for an adventure. Read this delightful Christmas story to your children and grandchildren and savor once more the birth of Jesus and his beautiful mother Mary as seen through the eyes of a little lamb. Delicately told with illustrations that capture the lighthearted wish of a young lamb who seeks adventure and is not disappointed. Suitable as a read aloud for children three years and up, and for readers seven and up, but don’t miss the opportunity to read it to them yourself!
The second story The Hungry Gray Mule tells of a mule bought by a good and kind man who does not believe in the Eucharistic Lord. One day he encounters St. Anthony of Padua preaching and he makes fun of him. Day after day goes by and the mule’s master continues to make fun of St. Anthony. Finally, the master confronts St. Anthony and explains why he can’t believe in the Eucharistic Lord. Saddened by his words, St. Anthony accepts the challenge to demonstrate that Jesus is truly present under the species of bread and wine. See what part our little mule friend plays as St. Anthony works to overcome his master’s doubts.
The Loyal Friend – our last little story features a fawn estranged from her mother and lost in a raging storm. A kind hermit befriends her, opening his simple cave to her and soothes her terrified fears of humans. A lovely relationship ensues. Be sure to read this gentle story through to its surprising end.
Three lovely and delicately told stories for Catholic children make perfect gifts for Christmas, First Holy Communion and birthdays.
