PreS-K—On a sunny morning, a pudgy rabbit packs up to go to the beach. He boards the bus with his pet goldfish, taking an overstuffed picnic basket and his beach umbrella. The quirky cast of characters on the bus, including a man in a silly hat and a tall, frisbee-throwing dog, is also headed for a day of fun in the sun. When they arrive, the sand is swarming with beach-goers, but the bunny manages to find a good spot. He enjoys a sand-filled lunch ("crunchy and good") and takes a dip in the sea, riding the waves with his goldfish. In the water, Fish befriends an affable octopus, who joins the goldfish in his little glass bowl. The rabbit and his friends fly kites, having "fun way up in the big blue sky." Finally, when the sun sets in a blaze of violet and gold, the beach-goers head for home. The straightforward text is augmented by Cartrow's uproarious watercolor and pencil illustrations. The exaggerated, somewhat startling facial expressions of the rabbit and his fellow sun worshipers, along with comical background details, enhance the easy-to-read story. About the Author
David Catrow's favorite subject in school was math. Why? Well, Mr. Hirsch's class was where Catrow did some of his best drawings! Catrow's zany illustrations have illuminated over 30 books for kids, and his editorial cartoons are syndicated in more than 900 newspapers in the U.S. and Canada. Not bad for someone who started out as a pre-med major at Kent State and later worked as a paramedic for ten years. During this time Catrow also worked as a freelance artist for the Cleveland Plain Dealer and the Akron Beacon-Journal. Art finally emerged as his definitive career, and he's never stopped since.

Wonderful illustrations make this book stand out!

This book has such wonderful illustrations that it deserves special mention - they're playful and whimsical and humorous, for both child and adult readers. The story is a simple one about a fun day at the beach, but the accompanying drawings are what make this story pop. Definitely one to check out!

Adorable illustrations with so much to look at and discuss. A short, simple book but the illustrations make it really fun to read to children. My 4 and 6 year olds loved it.
