A small tumbleweed and a small sparrow – are they too small? In The Tiniest Tumbleweed young readers will watch as these two little creatures grow and learn that they are the right size to do what they need to do – in other words, they are perfect.
The story opens with Mother Tumbleweed announcing “She’s here,” to Father Tumbleweed. Upon inspection, Father notes that the new arrival is quite small. But mother knows best and she assures her husband that their baby will grow just fine. Not far away, a baby sparrow pops out of his egg. His father notes that the new arrival is rather small. Again, the mother knows best and she insists, “He will grow.”
The Tiniest Tumbleweed follows these two babies as they mature. And they do grow, just not as much as their siblings. Would the little tumbleweed ever be able to grow big and strong and make seeds like other tumbleweeds? And what about the sparrow? How would he ever grow big enough to fly and spread seeds like his brothers and sisters?
Author Kathy Peach has found a delightful way to teach youngsters about coping with physical limitations and how everyone, no matter their limitations, can be useful to others. Tumbleweed and Sparrow are not as big as their siblings and by the middle of the story, it’s apparent that they never will be. How does one deal with being different? With having limitations that keep you from doing what you want to do? Eventually Tumbleweed and Sparrow come together and learn that they are a ‘perfect fit’ for each other. Young readers will see that while they may not fit the ‘norm,’ (whatever that may be), there is always a reason and purpose – you just have to find it.
The author drives her point home by having the text go back and forth between the two characters’ lives, showing how they were both dealing with being ‘different.’ First the tumbleweed, then the sparrow, back and forth. In many places, the text centering on the sparrow closely mirrored that of the tumbleweed, driving home the point that they were both dealing with being smaller. As with all Five Star publications, there are several pages of additional information in the back of the book. These include ‘Fun Facts’ (and even adults will likely learn a few things about tumbleweeds!) and a curriculum guide.

The Tiniest Tumbleweed is a sliver of a paperback picture book that will barely take up any physical space in your child’s bedroom, but will command a huge space in their hearts.
The Tiniest Tumbleweed is a super sweet fictional children’s picture book about a tumbleweed that is the smallest member of its family. Tumbleweed’s counterpart, who doesn’t meet Tumbleweed until the end of the book, is a wee little Sonoran Desert neighbour Baby Sparrow. We meet both independently as they are born at the start of the book. Each one grows unbeknownst to each other in their respective environments and they worry about being too small. Will they ever grow as big as their siblings?
This adorable picture book will demand to be read nightly and definitely should remain firmly established as a part of any child’s bookshelf. I read this one aloud to my tween and teen and they both agreed it is incredibly sweet. I will save The Tiniest Tumbleweed for either of the girls to take along when they babysit other people’s children, and to read to my niece and nephews, ages 2 to 7 (the sweet spot for this book is 3 to 8, or maybe 9, in my opinion).
The illustrations in The Tiniest Tumbleweed, by Alex Lopez are world class and memorable. Illustrations are important and even before this book arrived here I was pondering how on earth anyone could make a tumbleweed cute or cuddly or animated. Lopez manages that and more. He is a father of identical triplets residing in Silicon Valley, California. He helped to inform my important first impression of the book. These are honestly some of the cutest characters I have seen in a long time here. Lopez is super talented and he manages to convey emotion with his drawings of each character. The tumbleweed and house sparrow are each vulnerable due to their size. Their challenge is to find confidence and acceptance of their size and personality.
Kathy Peach provides a lovely story about resiliency, acceptance, and self esteem, growth and family. There’s a smart, tidy, little message in here also that speaks to the ‘Grow where you are planted’ kind of theme. There’s a hint of educational content about biodiversity which is a topic that runs throughout curriculums of school children in grade 5 and 6 here in Canada. There’s also a strong educational aspect to the book which is much more than I expected from this fictional children’s book. What’s even more wonderful than all of that is the fact that Peach manages to hide some of these lessons well so children won’t even realize they are learning about things like habitat and biodiversity.
First time author Kathy Peach moved from Tennessee to the Arizona area and followed her dream of pursuing a college degree in her retirement years. She opted to study early childhood and early childhood special education and taught for the Head Start program in Phoenix for a time. She combines her knowledge of child development and her experience teaching, rolling both into a substantial book that can also be used as a springboard for many crafts, lessons inside a classroom, or conversation starters at home. There are talking points and facts provided at end of the book, The Tiniest Tumbleweed. There’s a section about the house sparrow that could lead a child to want to research more and potentially prepare a project on the topic matter. There are fun facts and a curriculum guide included that can spark even more curiosity in the reader.
The Tiniest Tumbleweed is a really special story with remarkable illustrations and bonus extras that help give this book added value. The Tiniest Tumbleweed should be part of every library for every child between the ages of 4 to 9. I would say this book appeals to ages 4 to 8 but could be extended to a grade four child if they are still growing into their reading ability or if they have any learning challenges. While The Tiniest Tumbleweed has a great message for any child, it will also resonate strongly with kids who have visible or invisible differences. The Tiniest Tumbleweed is published by Little Five Star, a division of Five Star Publications and is out in 2016. It is 35 pages long.

First time author Kathy Peach’s story about two sweet little desert creatures is sure to bring a smile to you and your child’s face. This endearing book was designed to help children think big thoughts about what they can do to be the best version of themselves, regardless of their surroundings and circumstances. It shows kids that they do not have to be like everyone else. That who they are is pretty wonderful already. The Tiniest Tumbleweed is a great book for helping to increase a child’s self esteem and celebrate their uniqueness.
The illustrations in The Tiniest Tumbleweed are simple, yet sweet and adorable. The book comes with a curriculum guide as well as some tips about the characters themselves. My son and I enjoyed reading The Tiniest Tumbleweed together and it is often the go to book at bedtime.

About the Author
At a time of life when most people begin to slow down, Kathy Peach decided to head for the Southwest to live near her daughter after being in Tennessee her entire life. She then followed her lifelong dreams of earning a college degree and writing a children’s book. Peach graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in Early Childhood/Early Childhood Special Education and taught for the Head Start program in Phoenix. In developing The Tiniest Tumbleweed, she incorporated a method of writing children’s literature whereby readers can believe in a life of limitless possibilities, with theories from a psychologist who taught that all people have the capability to achieve. It is this strategic approach to the creation of The Tiniest Tumbleweed that makes Peach’s first book not only a delight, but an inspiration. She lives in Chandler, AZ.
Alex Lopez is a self-taught artist whose career initially developed in the video game industry, where he worked for SEGA, 2K Games and Konami. He has also provided artistic production and management services for Disney Interactive, Dynamite Comics and Stanford University. Lopez is proficient with numerous print, digital and multimedia genres and currently serves as an art director, building and training artistic teams.

Amazing book with positive lesson

It’s hard to believe that “The Tiniest Tumbleweed” is Kathy Peach’s first book.
Her writing style and voice speak volumes about her invested careers as a mother, grandmother, and educator. She understands children. She understands children’s mind. And she understands what children need to know so that they can become who they were created to be, just like tiny tumbleweed and baby sparrow.
Peach has juxtaposed authentic, lovable characters with the often-harsh backdrop of the desert to create a literal learning and growing environment through which children and adults of all ages can visualize their own progress against adversity and trials to become all they can become.
Teachers and parents will love Peach’s age-appropriate sentence structure and vocabulary as well as her resounding message that we don't need to compare ourselves to other people (or tumbleweeds, or sparrows), and children will love her rich characters, the charming illustrations, and the knowledge that they, too, can become who they were created to be.

Unexpected Friendship

Kathy Peach has penned an absolutely adorable children’s book portraying a message of how to become the best one can be. The main characters, unlike most main characters, are non-human. One is a tiny tumbleweed and the other a baby house sparrow. They are bounded together by a common trait—their small stature—that could be seen in a negative light. Despite this they bond together because they have learned to accept and live with their physical limitation. They got to this point because they were encouraged and supported by their parents. They learned to focus on doing and being their best.
Written for young children, 4-9 year olds, this delightful tale helps them to understand the concept of self-efficacy as well as interconnectedness. Set in a desert environment where survival is critical, one has to be rely on others. Hence, these two learn that together they can face the harshness of the desert. I highly recommend this book to elementary teachers who want to expose students to desert life and the concept of self-efficacy

Kathy Peach is an amazing author. She has an incredible way of portraying a meaning that children can relate to. I am a first grade teacher in a low income area. My students do not have very much experience with books. They find it incredibly hard to relate and understand a book past retelling the major events. During a unit on author's purpose I chose to read this book to them. It was early in the unit and the students were still struggling to understand that an author has a meaning within a text. During the reading all the students became very excited and kept shouting out questions about the book. When we got to a particular spot all the children gasped and started shouting all at once. They kept saying they know what the author's purpose was! Since we were still in the beginning of the unit I was skeptical of the answers they may come up with. However, I stopped reading to ask what they thought. With much delight and amusement they all had decided that the author's purpose was to keep trying no matter what! The excitement in their eyes and voices was all I needed to know that they had truly understood the book. The discussion that followed was centered around how we (as a class) could use this book as a reminder to keep trying and not focus on trying to figure out the author's purpose! I want to send the greatest of thanks to Ms. Peach and her incredible way of getting my students to understand a topic though their own thoughts and connections!
