A 3rd grade teacher's perspective of Karl's Story

I am a 3rd grade teacher who has used this book in my class for the last 7 years. It is a wonderful book that describes the life of a young German girl from right before WWII until much later in life. The story is told through the eyes of her teddy bear, Karl. When I read this book to the class, I am able to stress those areas where my kids really have to think about what it would be like to be in Karyn's shoes. First the talk of war, then the increasing shortages of everyday things, building bomb shelters, air raids, forced evacuation and separation from parents and all kinds of other things that get my students thinking and talking. There is so much to teach about this time in history using this book. I do want to say, however, that it is just a very enjoyable book to read. After having read it to 4 classes over the last 4 years, I don't tire of the story. If you want an entertaining, feel good story rooted in the actual experiences of the author, then give Karl's Story a try. I don't think you'll be disappointed. Recently, I shared the book with another 3rd grade teacher who, upon reading it to the class, raved about how captivating the story is. Truly, a wonderful book for adults and kids alike. I know my kids love the story and are engaged when I read it. As I've said before, there is much to be taught through this book.

A literary jewel...

One of the most delightful children's books I've ever read. I laughed; I cried. I feared; I hoped. I learned; I traveled to another time. After the last page, I found it took an hour or more for me to come back to the present. My heart stayed in the toy museum with Karl. Truly engrossing. Wonderful. A must-read for all ages.

great story-telling and well-written

This book possesses all the ingredients to captivate your attention and focus: extraordinary imagination, great story-telling and well-written. Once I started it and I could not finish till I was at the last page of the book. It is highly recommended not only for children, but also great reading for everyone.
