From School Library Journal
Gr 3–6—On Zoe's birthday, she receives a diamond from her birth mother and meets three girls who also have powers given to them from inherited gemstones. Together they search for other cadets to drive back The Darkness, a malevolent force that takes the form of tentacled lizards and can control those who are dishonest or irresponsible. The color work here is warm and attractive; it glows in a way that befits the gemstone motif and easily pulls viewers into the story. But neither the visuals nor the plot will keep many readers, except for those who love any and all magical girl adventures. There is a complete absence of convincing peril, and the action and panel transitions rarely generate any narrative suspense or rising action. In part, this seems to be due to formatting that tries to accommodate both print and digital publishing, but mostly the book lacks compelling structure and features many examples of clunky visual storytelling. The story is gamely moralistic and the characters diverse and inclusive; it has all the hallmarks of a production that means well but ultimately means little else. VERDICT Well-intentioned, but in a rising tide of girl-friendly comics, readers can find better.—Benjamin Russell, Belmont High School, NH

Fast-Paced Diverse Fun, but Not Much Depth
By Jesse
I wish I could rate it higher! This was adorable, and I loved the idea and the diversity. I may have enjoyed it more if I was younger (think: 12), but it didn't have a whole lot of depth to it. The plot goes by really fast, with awkwardly interjected moral lessons that are very poorly done. An example: one girl yells at another girl in one panel (out of nowhere? for no reason?) and two pages later they're apologizing for another single panel, and somehow this is supposed to be a moral lesson on working together. Ehhhh.
The girls also learn to use their powers very quickly, and a lot of things aren't explained. At one point they float into a cave that's a hologram? a delusion? and it teaches them about their powers? What? Why? What is going on?
I wish it had slowed down and not tried to cram in so much (action, transformation sequences, twists, morality, friendships) all at one time. Let us get to know the characters and let them build real friendships. Also, and this might be nitpicking... but there was only one genuinely funny laugh out loud moment for me. Kids' stuff should be FUN, and while this was full of exciting action (that I as a jaded adult probably didn't appreciate much because it was very obvious the girls were never in any real danger and would obviously save the day in the end), it didn't have anything really fun.
So, while I'd love to pass my copy along to a much younger girl who might appreciate it, I don't think this is a good read for adults at all, not even adults who love comics and superheros and girls with magic powers and cheesy kid fun. It just didn't quite work very well.

A Great Empowering Graphic Novel for Girls
By Grateful Grandma
What a great Graphic Novel series for girls. I hope there are more because we did not really get to know the girls well in this action packed story.
Zoe starts at a new school and is immediately hassled by some soccer playing girls. She is rescued by a group of exchange students. As she heads home, she is grumbling that it is her birthday. At home her parents give her a gift from her Birth Mother. This is when she reads a strange letter and gets a Diamond Gem. She is not sure what to make of it. When she returns home the next day there is something wrong with her parents and a black dragon demon is after her. Once again being rescued by this group of girls she finds out they are part of the Crystal Cadets and that is one of them as well. The dragon represents The Darkness that feeds upon bad behaviors like greed, lying, cheating. Only friendship and magic can defeat it. They are still searching for more cadets.
Each girl has specific powers and rides upon a magic creature such as a unicorn, a butterfly, pegasus etc. As another reviewer mentioned, the cast is extremely racially diverse, and it’s all taken in stride, with no stereotypes in sight. And the Darkness causes trouble all over the world, so the settings are diverse as well.
I think this series would be devoured by young girls as well as empowering them to become better people to try to stamp out the darkness in our own world.
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

A great starter Magical Girl series.
By Rhianna Walker
Ugh. I hate admitting that this as pretty much my first foray into the Magical Girl genre. I've always found it a bit of a genre I'm curious about but afraid to dabble in because it seems like it could be so cheesy and awful. Fortunately, Crystal Cadets was a really enjoyable—if a little far-fetched feeling—place to start.
I know, you're scratching your head wondering why I'd say far-fetched in about a comic featuring girls who have crystals that give them special powers...? It's not that bit that gave a bit of eye roll, it was how the characters ran off on their adventure with seemingly no concern for their foster/adoptive parents/families and it all just kind of felt silly. That said, it's a pretty neat concept and if my daughter was a couple of years older I think she would love it. Definitely perfect for the target age group but maybe not so much for the adults who thought it might be a more manga-like version of Lumberjanes.
If you're looking for a fun adventure comic to get a get for a girl who is a newbie I highly recommend it!
