Review
"[H]onors one of the great ladies of our time with perfectly poetic aplomb! Bravo." -- NEW YORK TIMES 2016
"[M]eeting Nola 26 years ago was amazing....Nola trusts humans...she learned over her lifetime to trust keepers and to know that we are there to take care of her and to help her...her favorite thing to do is to be scratched and rubbed by her keepers! She loves it when we approach, when she's lying down and we gently rub her. She loves to be scratched behind her ears and have her back rubbed with a scrub brush! She's an amazing animal. The meaning of the name Nola is 'famous champion'- she is a champion for her species! Rhinos are amazing prehistoric looking animals...yes, they have power and strength, but they're also gentle. They're caring loving mothers, and the fathers here at the Safari Park;it's easy to love and respect an animal that has that much power andthat much grace and that much love to give."
-- Jane Kennedy, Lead Mammal Keeper, San Diego Zoo Safari Park, "Ask the animals, they will teach you..." JOB 12:7
"[N]ola's voice speaks clearly from the pages, reminding us that extinction-minus-three is a lesson for all to learn by heart." -- National Geographic, Education
"[C]leverly introduces young children to environmental awareness...young readers are educated so that they, and their parents, will become global citizens." -- SHARON STONE, Actress/Activist
"[N]ola is illustrated by Pilar Lama, who lends large-size, bright, and fun full-page illustrations to enhance Stephanie Lisa Tara's discussions of Nola, the last Northern White Rhino in America. Only three such animals are left on the planet (as of 2015), and Nola's blend of verse, watercolors, and insights on overall happiness and connections in life are well done and compelling. Within a general 'love what you've got' message are the antics and discoveries of a baby rhino who learns to be happy with what she has in life. Concluding this gentle rhyming story is an interview with the real-life Nola's zookeeper, a note about her demise, and full-page color photos of this rare beast. Pilar Lama also illustrates the Nola Coloring Book, which features the some drawings as Nola but in black and white line productions perfect for a child's coloring efforts. These are lovely, easy approaches that teach about the rare endangered Northern White Rhino but couches lessons within a light, fictional story line perfect for new readers and parental read-aloud." --Donovan's Bookshelf, June 2016
"[N]ola's story is tragic, but this gentle book celebrates her life while impressing a way of looking at conserving future animals.Stephanie Lisa Tara uses a gently reassuring refrain:
"You will always be loved little rhino, it's true
Now and forever... I promise you!"
...throughout the book sets up a rhythm but also reads as a comfort for a hard subject. The illustrations are bright, simple and friendly, the characters having a child-friendly feel to them. The book is also being offered as a coloring book, the proceeds to benefit the San Diego Zoo Global The message of the book is clear, but not heavy-handed, and applicable not only in conservation but also on a more personal level,"Love what you've got (not what you don't) Matters a lot!" is the basis for the first order of respect, self-respect, and the building block for preservation. (Stephanie Lisa Tara Books in partnership with the San Diego Zoo, 2016 level 5-7 years old.) --Agy Wilson, imAGYnations; April 2016
"[I] have always been interested in all wildlife, and rhinos in particular. I live outside Atlanta, and I enjoy seeing the black rhino at Zoo Atlanta. Stephanie Lisa Tara has renewed my interest in rhinos with her beautiful book"Nola". I love sharing her books with my grandchildren. We must educate children on the preservation of all living animals so that they will be around for many more generations to come!" ~Susan Butker, Wildlife Enthusiast
"[T]his picture of Nola tells me how lonely these animals have become. How very sad not only for them, but us. What will it take to open our eyes to the destruction we have caused them. How many more will die? All of them so our children and grandchildren will never see the pure awesomeness of these wonders God created, and man has chosen to wipe from the face of the planet. Will we learn, you tell me. I sincerely hope so. Not only for their sake, but ours." --Pamela Burgess, Rhino Activist
"[W]hen will we learn that you can't eat money? Money is an arbitrary object that we as humans decide to put value on. this object does not gives us life, value or love. If only we could look at wildlife and rhinos the way we look and value money. If only we could realize that without these beautiful creatures and this amazing world, life would mean nothing. If we keep valuing money over wildlife we will lose everything. one by one, specie by specie until there is nothing. Remove the rhino and you transcend into cascading events that removes all of the trees one by one until there is nothing but dirt.Tell me then how much your money is worth then when there are no rhinos to see." --Demmi Cunningham, RhinoActivist

SAD, SAD TEARS FOR NOLA FROM THE WORLD OVER AND US ALL: --Debra Edgington
THIS IS TRULY A SAD DAY, NOLA A BEAUTIFUL CREATION OF GOD HAS NOW BEEN CALLED HOME: I had the pleasure of seeing Nola for almost the past three years, and each of them special. I will certainly miss her when I come back to the park next year. Nola you have now reached the gates of heaven and you will be welcomed in the loving arms of God. The angels will watch over you as you are now enjoying paradise, in where no one will hurt you. I love you Nola! It won't be the same without you, but your legacy will be eternal. Rest In Peace my love, for you are in the loving arms of the father, our creator. That was very hard to write as I fight back tears! I can't tell you how sad I am. I love you old girl!--Gary Pacheco
GOD BLESS YOU SWEET GIRL!: --Brandi Kelley
NOLA WAS INCREDIBLE: She stood for the many who were not brought into this world. The rhino was exploited for their horns. How sad what they did to them to gain money and fame for themselves. This leaving only the few to carry on their breed. Oh, to see these great animals in the wild would be a miracle into today's world of naturalist and earth's pollution and green house effect. How truly sad for them and the many other species trying to survive in today's world. Love you Nola. Peace be with you in your new heavenly home. --Cindy Loftus
REST IN PEACE BIG GIRL: --Marcie Grasso
RHINOS ARE SUCH SPIRITUAL ANIMALS: Even in that last picture of Nola, she looked as if she understood everything in the world. The one rhino I had the pleasure of meeting, looked me right in the eyes. I swear they can see straight to the soul. And even if they can understand all the horrible things humans have done, they remain stoic and so gentle. Like they have already forgiven us. Such majestic creatures created by God himself. So sad we don't appreciate his gifts. I'm currently working on my RVT and hope to get a job at a wild life rehab. Or at least take part in conserving what animals we have left. --Stevi Spear
RIP BEAUTIFUL NOLA!: --Naomi Lisby
ABSOLUTELY HEART BREAKING NEWS!: Absolutely! She will never be forgotten, same with those we have lost in such a short period, in the last 13 months -Suni, Angalifu, Nabire, now the beautiful Nola. Her memory will live on! Thanks to Safari Park, The Ol Pejeta Conservancy and the others working with them she will also live on through the reproduction efforts and the determination to bring back these incredible Northern White Rhinos! But today, it is all about you Nola, we love this sweet sweet Rhino.Into the future you will be a symbol of hope and what is good in this world! --Stephen Gustavson
CLEARLY SHE WAS LOVED!: Oh my, I'm so sorry for your loss. --Selene Joy Castrovilla
THIS BREAKS MY HEART: Even though I never saw her I loved her. My heart goes out to all of you. She will fear no more, she will play among the flowers and all that went before her. I will always remember you Nola, you were a bright star in our lives. --Pamela Burgess

From the Inside Flap
Nola is the story of the last American Northern White Rhino. Today, only three are left on the planet. Nola was rescued from her African savanna as a child by the good, kind folks at San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Poaching has decimated Nola's species due to the fallacy that rhino horns are thought to possess magical medicinal powers. They do not. Nevertheless. . . rhino horns are big business. Extinction is an ugly word. Greed is an uglier word. What to do? Understand what happened to Nola and her kind. Learn the lessons that Nola teaches us. And then, tell our children Nola's story using gentle, evocative language that invites compassion, inspiration and awareness.

By Amy D.
I love Stephanie Lisa Tara's passion for the environment and for bringing the most vulnerable creatures to the attention of the public, and especially to children. This story of a special rhino is especially poignant - the rhino is special for a sad reason: she is the only one of her kind left in America and one of three in the world. But through Stephanie's words and Pilar's illustration, Nola is celebrated. Children everywhere will remember and love Nola and learn about conservation and their role as stewards of the planet. This is the consistent message of Stephanie's books that I love. The illustrations are rich and Nola is rendered adorably. The artist seems to have captured a dichotomy of emotion in the human children in the book. They "smile", yet also seem sad, depending on how you interpret the illustration. Perhaps that captures just the right tone. We smile when we see these beautiful, majestic creatures, yet we also feel sad and even angry at their fate. That in itself offers a great teaching moment for children to talk about what will certainly be a mixture of feelings for sweet Nola and the fate of her kind.

I would like to congratulate you Stephanie for this great story
By Cliente Amazon
First thing, I would like to congratulate you Stephanie for this great story. It is something for sure Nola, R.I.P., has and will enjoy with whoever have a chance to get in touch with the book. And like Nola does in the book's illustrations, for sure it will set a huge smile, and will make to every person - kids and adults - to enjoy her story.
Second thing, to congratulate Pilar Lama for how she has created Nola. How she has given the color to each and every illustration, making possible to visualize love and happiness. Nola and the rest of the troop has an unique design. You can just look to each one of them, place the finger on them, and move it through the illustration like giving a tickle to the animal. Again full of love and hapiness. Great job!!!
Third thing, to congratulate Tom Hamlyn, for the designing. Has done a great job, making the book to be almost perfect. Almost, cause it comes to an end.
Again, congratulations to all of you, and thank you very much for giving us a chance to get to know about Nola's story. Muchas gracias and good luck. I am sure everybody will love it

I shared this book today with a class of first grade students. It is such a sweet story, I was holding back good tears by the end. They were reciting the refrain by the end. I cant wait to share it with my own children at home! The artwork is beautiful, too!
