Space dragons are tearing up the galaxy and something has to be done. From the mythical planet of Earth, a hero is chosen – Chance Maybe, a twelve year old boy in a wheelchair.
Though he’s not so much as chosen, as he’s rather the victim of a lab experiment gone wrong that snatches him away from Earth. Upon arrival, the Altie scientists are so thrilled to see him that they quickly stuff him in a cloak and smuggle him off to their rulers to find out what to do with him.
The Elders confer, a prophesy is revealed, and Chance becomes their would-be Dragon Slayer – or so they had hoped. However, Chance just wants to go home to his bedroom window to watch the neighborhood kids play in the park. That silly prophesy is up for interpretation in his mind. Though disappointed, the Elders decide to help him return home, and they dust off a legendary spaceship, The Centurion Jack, with a crew lead by the disgraced, drunken Captain Adalin. His appointed second-in-command is the noble Teegs who was once the captain's prison guard. Things do not go well.
Despite the bickering crew, they’re off to see the mysterious Mr. Ages, who’s living in a gloomy forest on a haunted planet, to be shown how to send Chance home. Utter rubbish, really, as no one is even sure if all that is anything but a myth. Nonetheless, the quest is on, but lurking in the shadows of space, the Emerald Dragon pursues them in hopes of capturing the boy in its goal for galactic conquest. But not even the Bloodfang pirates, beastly hyena-morgs, or a phantom menace sabotaging their mission will stop Chance from getting home. Though if he does choose to help his wonderfully odd, new friends, he might find the strangest thing of all in this galaxy – a place to belong.

Charles Douglas has had an eclectic career. He has been a newspaper cartoonist, graphic designer, pizza maker, and has worked in film and video production. He grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, and shares a house with his black lab, Zoey.

A good start to a fun series.

I thought this was a good start to a hopefully long series. I would like to see some of the things that are introduced to be flushed out in future books. I would describe as Narnia in space, or if Guardians of the Galaxy was mostly animals with only one human. It's also nice that the main character is a paraplegic, thats something we dont see enough of. (I know on the cover he's standing but thats explained in the book) Original, and humorous with lots of action especially the last third of the book. Although written for middle-schoolers, I think ages all the way up to adults will find it to be a fun read too. I will be passing this book to my nephew and niece and I think they'll really like it. When's the next one coming out?

My almost 5-yr-old son would not let me stop reading this to him! We were mesmerized and dying to know what would happen at the end of each chapter! Charles is seriously talented. I just love this book.
