About the Author
Melinda Kinsman lives on a small peninsular called The Wirral, in North West England. She loves climbing mountains and rock-climbing (both abroad, and in her local mountains of Snowdonia), and she has always had a soft-spot for cuddly toys!
As Melinda has to lie down a lot each day, due to health issues, she spends most of that time using her iPad to write and illustrate her books. (Drawing can be especially challenging, as she needs to keep the iPad steady by balancing it with one leg up in the air - much to the amusement of her family!)
Melinda originally wrote a book of poems for her 6 year old niece a few years ago, but never dreamt of trying to publish them, or of trying to illustrate them herself. The advent of ebooks and handheld tablets now makes self-publishing an exciting possibility for her!
The Top of the Wardrobe Gang series of books are credited to both Melinda and a motley crew of cuddly toy characters. This bunch of cuddly toys live on the Top of the Wardrobe - they like to call this the "penthouse suite"! They enjoy reading, and want to try writing their own books. Most of the cartoon gang characters are based on "real" members of Melinda's cuddly toy family.

What a beautifully written book

What a beautifully written book!
The storyline, told in rhyme, keeps the story moving with interest giving it the perfect jingle.
Boy was Cyril shocked to learn who the looters were who stole his nuts, but becomes compassionate realizing his grandparents may have become a bit senile as they’ve aged forgetting where they’ve hid their own nuts. The ending was quite sweet as together they all sat down for a family meal “acorn stew.”
I also love the “one liners” such as the use of the word “crack” printed on one page of the illustrations. For me, this helps boost the message, but highlights the imaginary sound effects of the story adding to the meaning and suspense. These are the sort of pages children will pause and enjoy before moving on.
In addition to the storyline, I’d be remiss not to mention the bright illustrated colors that helped draw me further into the story.
Of Melinda’s books, this was one of my favorites.

Funny, Cozy, Good Message!

In this funny rhyming adventure, Cyril goes looking for an acorn thief only to realize it's his Grandpa, who is aided and abetted by Grandma. My dogs and I quite enjoyed this hilarious bedtime story. The ending was a nice, sweet one with a positive message (as Melinda's books usually have). I think this might actually be one my favorite Melinda Kinsman books to date!
The illustrations were soft and cozy and fit the story perfectly. Five paws up!

British author Melinda Kinsman both writes and illustrates her popular children's books from her home on a small peninsula called The Wirral, in North West England. Melinda has to lie down a lot each day, due to health issues, she spends most of that time using her iPad to write and illustrate her books. That most assuredly does not deter her from composing excellent books that entertain both children and the lucky adults reading to them!
Stepping away from her usual Wardrobe Gang stories Melinda has concocted a delightful animal story that not only has a fine adventure tale told in Melinda’s charming rhyme (and with her illustrations which as fine as they come!), but the story also lets children learn about the habits of squirrels – and she throws in some terrific comments about aging!
Cyril the squirrel discovers a nut thief and in chasing the thief to restore the nuts to their proper location, Cyril discovers the true identity of the nut thief – someone very close to him whose wife is also in one the theft ring because of a dwindling of memory in older squirrels their age – manages to save the thief who has fallen in the river and in the end the whole family comes together to share the nuts and gain each other’s confidence.
It all works very well and is one of Melinda’s finest stories (and lessons at the end). Grady Harp, January 16
