From the Author
Q: Will you tell us about the Numbers Game books?A: Absolutely! In the New Order Republic of America, 16-year-olds are given a Rating, a number that encompasses what they're worth to society. It determines their career, living conditions, and potential partners. Book one, Numbers Game, is the story of Treena, who gets a different Rating than the one she earned. She decides to fight for what is rightfully hers, determined to get her boyfriend back in the process.Meanwhile, she meets Vance, a mysterious prisoner-turned-soldier who has his own agenda. When someone tries to kill Treena--twice--they uncover a dark conspiracy that risks much more than Treena's Rating. Q: Great. You probably get this question a lot, but the concept is so unique that I have to ask--where did you get the idea for the Numbers Game world? A: I love this question! My husband sent me to the bank to finalize the loan on the truck he was buying. I looked at my credit score and thought how strange it was that one number was supposed to incorporate everything about me--my purchase history, how reliable I'd been, whether they could trust me to make payments, that sort of thing. And then I thought how strange it was, that we as citizens are so trusting of the accuracy of that little number, and how important it is in our lives. It spiraled from there--what is someone was manipulating the numbers? What if the number included appearance and intelligence rather than just financial history? It didn't take long for the plot to unfold in my mind.Q: What type of reader would like this series?A: I tell people that it's like a thriller version of The Scarlet Letter, but set in the future. With bombs. And kissing. Dystopian fans who like Divergent, Hunger Games, and Matched would love it. Q: Who is your favorite character and why?A: At first, Tali was my favorite. She knows exactly what she wants and doesn't put up with anything. But now that the book is done, I think Vance has overtaken her as my favorite. The way he sees the world and struggles to survive while torn between two worlds really resonates with me. Q: What was your favorite part of the writing process? What was the hardest?A: I really enjoyed taking an idea and running with it. Once I had the world solidified in my head, it was fun to explore all the different aspects of it--political, social, financial, emotional, etc. I wrote myself into a dozen corners because I was just having too much fun. The hardest part? Probably the time it took to finish it. When I began writing Numbers Game in 2012, I was also juggling a journalism career and three kids, and then my nonfiction book was accepted for publication, so that took all my remaining hours. When my fourth child was born, everything came to a screeching halt for a while. It wasn't until Numbers Game won first place in a statewide writing contest in that I decided to buckle down and get serious with it. Q: Why did you decide to make it a series instead of a stand-alone book? A: You know how some authors say that their characters grab hold of the story and steer it in a different direction without their permission? That's kind of what happened here. It just couldn't end with this book. There was so much more that needed to be explored. Besides, Treena had a little more growing to do, and I think you'll love the person that she becomes.Q: Thanks for joining us. Where can we find out more?A: Check out the link at the bottom of the book description or on my website. You'll get two novellas for free just for joining my VIP Clan. I also give exclusive deals and insider info to my clan members. They're very special to me and I do my best to show them, so we have a lot of fun!

There were both pros and cons to this sequel
By Ms. Just One More Book
(WARNING: SPOILERS from book one)

This second book, Numbers Ignite, starts off where book one ends. At the end of book one, Treena and Vance worked together with the resistance to overthrow the Empress, and ascend Treena to the throne as the rightful successor. Unbeknownst to them, Mill's, the head of the resistance, coordinated a missile attack to kill not only the Empress and her council, but Treena and her supporters, including Vance's clan members. Escaping to freedom, Vance overheard the plan, and ran back in the attempt to save not only Treena, but his clan member's as well. Too late, he helps coordinates a rescue mission. He finds Treena still alive amidst the rubble, carries her to the hospital, and then turns himself over to be arrested by his clan members.

Treena awakes from the hospital with her true rating restored, thinking she is now the Empress of NORA. Instead she is informed by her stepfather Konnor that while in a coma, he signed her rights away to her former boyfriend Dresden. No longer wanting to be a pawn in their game, she escapes in the hopes of following Vance. Now Vance is a prisoner within the resistance, being accused of crimes he not only committed, but one big one that he did not. If he is not found innocent, he will surely lose his life. Treena, in the hopes of following Vance, is now wandering the desert, her survivor pack having been stolen, and NORA desperately searching for her.

I'm really torn on this book, as there are both pros and cons, which is why the mediocre rating. Unlike Numbers Game, this book had little to do with NORA or the rating system, and takes you into a completely different direction. I actually liked the direction it took. It puts everything onto a much larger scale, and shows how their petty bigotry has blinded them to a much bigger threat (not unlike our own current events). It also sets the series up nicely for the next installment.

Now on to the characters. Vance is a favorite. We get to know him more deeply this book via flashbacks into his past. While his loyalty has been questionable, we know him to be honorable, trying to follow in his father's footsteps and save his family. He continues to grow in book two, and is becoming the son and leader his father would have been proud of. Despite him being a prisoner throughout the majority of the book, his words and deeds were hero worthy.

On the other hand, Treena declined this book. In the beginning of book one, I found her to be selfish, self absorbed, petty, and a bit vapid. Later, she grew on me, as she began to grow as a character. After she met Vance and started to see the world beyond the rating system, she matured and began to think of others. Unfortunately, that progress seemed to come undone this book. Several times throughout the story she thinks to herself that her actions cause danger and pain to those around her, yet she continuously does the same things over and over again. She's impulsive, knowing her actions are dangerous to others, but she does them anyways. Then at the end, with her "hero complex" firmly in check, she makes her list of demands, prior to agreeing to help "her" people. It honestly made me want to wring her neck, and maybe the author's for writing her that way. With so many opportunities at the end of book one for this supposed heroine, to write her in this way was disappointing!

My last complaint was the ideology that a group of integrants had technology which was supposedly far superior than that of NORA, yet most could neither read nor write, let alone do math. Far fetched seems too soft a word. When it involves medicine, or scientific/technological inventions, it seems hardly feasible that any of these could be done without those basic skills. Perhaps I'm nitpicking, but that seemed a glaringly obvious flaw in this story.

Overall, like I said, I found (in my non important opinion) both good and bad in this follow up story. I liked the storyline itself and where it's headed. I will most likely read the third book, and hope that the author takes Treena in a likeable direction.

Not just a placeholder
By Liz Stone
One of the best sequels I've read in the genre. Instead of being a rehash/repeat of events similar to the first book Rode was able to take her characters in a completely new direction while at the same time remaining true to who Treena and Vance had become by the end of Numbers Game. The settings were unique and engaging.

Rode manages to realistically show both strengths and weaknesses in several characters, not just Treena and Vance but several of the supporting cast as well. The ending was well written, surprising, and left me wanting more.

Great second book in the series
By HG
A very different book than the first, but still held me captivated and wanting to know if Treena and Vance could make their way back to each other. There is a lot going on here, but the love is always front and center and the driving force for our characters to be the best they can be. High,y recommend this book and series and cannot wait for the next book! The lead up to it suggests a lot more adventure and another big scenery change!
