A fun debut with very clean language--a good gap book for those who are growing out of MG but not yet ready for YA.

I was privileged to read an ARC as Ryan Dalton is one of my JFP buddies. :) This review is cross-posted with what I wrote on Goodreads.

So, this is an interesting read for me as I'm a) not familiar with the genre, b) really not familiar with the genre, c) well, you get the point.

That said, it was a fun read, although in some parts it was confusing for me, which possibly is contributed to my unfamiliarity with the genre.

The theme of lightning was interesting, and the visuals accompanying it were reminiscent of Stephen King. I found myself almost disappointed when Dalton would continue to write about other things to, you know, make a story, because those visuals were really boss.

The language is extremely clean. I personally think the age group might be more appropriate for MG, especially those on the cusp of MG and YA since there are so few books for that age range. The length would provide a challenging read but not the drastic shift to some other, older YAs.

That said, there are a lot of YAs that have extremely foul language (mine included), and I suspect a lot of parents AND teens AND kids would appreciate a clean read.

Although a minor character, Fred was my favorite character because of his "dated" terminology, which was written very well... then made me sad... as I realize I still speak that way and maybe that's why my students humor me with "WTF, PROFESSOR?" smiles. He was absolutely charming in the way that Saul got his Breaking Bad spinoff (would read the crap out of a Fred-spinoff, btw).

Anyway, enjoyable read although I'm not familiar with the genre, and congrats to Ryan Dalton on having a great debut!

A satisfying treat that's well worth the time

How fantastic to find a new series that is so satisfying, funny, heartwarming, and smart. I laughed, I cried, I gasped...it was a wonderful adventure that I didn't want to end. The characters are expertly drawn and their interactions moving and authentic. Can't wait for the next book.

Couldn't put it down--the characters and plot pacing are fantastic! Perfect for both young and old alike--no language or innuendo, but still a great read for crusty old souls like myself. If you just want to enjoy a good yarn with some twists and turns, you can't go wrong with the adventures of Malcolm and Valentine in The Year of Lightning. The only issue I have is waiting for the second book!

With the help of her courageous cousin, her fearless grandmother, and eventually the entire community, Manuela mothers the manatee and educates the village so the animals are enjoyed not for their meat but for their beauty and gentility. Davies is a zoologist, whose knowledge comes through; she thoughtfully weaves information about the natural world into moments of action and bravery. This book is based on the true story of an orphaned manatee and the efforts of an organization (Natütama) to save the Amazonian creature. Davies includes many Native words with footnotes explaining their definitions. Wright's periodic, bold-line illustrations add an authentic folksy feel to the narrative. Lots of twists and things to consider

A girl, Manuela, wants to go fishing with her father on what she thinks is a typical fishing trip. However Manuela’s dad has other plans. When the trip results in the killing of a manatee, a baby manatee is left without a family. This situation creates challenges and conflicts that Manuela has to carefully figure out.
Other kids will enjoy the book because Manuela gets to learn about what she believes and how to stand up for herself. Manuela also learns about ways to take care of a baby manatee. She has to figure out how to take responsibility and how her actions may impact others.

What’s interesting about the book is that kids can learn about a new culture and start to understand the impact on our environment and animals. In the book, Manuela changes her perspective. Manuela’s values and thoughts evolve and change based on her experiences. Manuela even learns the value of creating an action plan. The book provides a lot of twists and things to consider. There is even a little bit of a scare in the Epilogue section but everything turns out okay.

This is Keenan’s new favorite bedtime story. Maybe it’s because he’s so much like Nite…very short tempered. He loves cats and I noticed with this story that he pays attention to detail. Because we use this as a bed time story, I had find a creative way to explain to him what “put to sleep” means. I’ve read this story every night for the past few days and he already corrects me when I try to tell the story without reading the text, especially the dialogue between Nite and Tom. This is a great book and we’re looking forward to see how the relationship between Nite and Keith develops hopefully in future editions.

I gave this to my granddaughter who loved the book. She especially liked that it was the cat telling the story. She is a “cat girl" and said she wished her cats could talk also!!

It’s a sweet and relatable story about a brother and sister spending the day at the park.
As a strong supporter of dual language education I believe it’s important to start exposing children to Spanish early on. The story teaches a few Spanish words and phrases in a memorable way useful in everyday life. It’s a cute book with cute illustrations.

My 9 year old loved the book. It was easy for her to read in English and Spanish. She really enjoyed how Derek was teaching his little sister to learn Spanish. This book has encouraged her to seek more Spanish books. My favorite part was the cute rhyme at the end.

My kids loved it!

Both my boys who don't really know any Spanish enjoyed reading the book. It's an easy read for kids, mine are 6&7 so they loved being able to just pick up on the basics of some Spanish words.
We're ready to see what Derek and Haylee do next!

Great designs, good use of full page and perfect print link

This Adult Coloring Book of Relaxing Patterns is full of intricate designs. I love that all of the designs cover the entire page. Some of the designs are quite unusual. At the end of the book is a print link. The PDF file opens easily and displays all of the designs for printing. Each design goes right out to the edge of the page just as they do in the book.
