Kids won’t realize how much they are learning as they travel the land of Biome through the eyes of a skeleton.

This is the first book we’ve read from this author, and we got it mainly because my grandchildren are obsessed with Minecraft gaming. As an English teacher, I really want them to enjoy reading as much as they do video games, and this book has definitely helped with that mission. Not only is the storyline itself very attention-grabbing, the fact that it is set in the future also makes it a great read for today’s youth who are so enthralled with life in the future. As he describes Domino’s life in the Biome, Craft has a way with words that creates a vivid picture of the futuristic world. I particularly like that he uses some more complex phrasing that is often missing in youth fiction. It is easy to understand what is meant simply through the context of adventure which makes it a surprisingly educational read. Kids won’t realize how much they are learning as they travel the land of Biome through the eyes of a skeleton.

In this adventure, we follow Wenda the witch. She is collecting magical items when she is captured by the evil Arson Army. Along the way of she finds herself with new magical skills, and along with her allies she needs to learn to use them in order to escape the Arson Army and save her family and the Otherworld from the destruction of King Ghastly. Can she get it all done?

Bought this for my 7 year-old son, who loves playing Minecraft. Yet another story for him to be engrossed in by Mr. Craft. These books bring the joy of reading to my son. We can't wait for more stories for my son to read. These really encourage him to get better at reading!

~~ Where do all the critters go in the rain? ~~

With English presented first followed by Chinese, this Marcus Monkey story is about the day when Marcus is out playing and a storm rolls in. As always, having read some of the other Marcus Monkey stories, Marcus pretty much does as he likes when he likes. No one is there to tell him of the danger of being out in a storm and Marcus is curious as to where all the other animals go when it rains. He meets all kinds of creatures and does some counting of raindrops.

Delightfully illustrated, I am not a big fan of some of the rhymes. The poetry doesn't always roll off the the tongue the first time and some of the word choices are a little "off". For e.g.:
A bear mom galloped through the dense scrubs
With a cub being carried way on her back.
"Mom, where are we going?" asked the cub,
"To the our home in the cave 'til the rain cuts us slack."

HOWEVER Marcus is one of those critters that gets to you in an attractive way and I know the kids just love his antics so the book has great appeal.

Graham's Shiny Things tackles counting in a unique way

I really liked Graham's Shiny Things and enjoyed reading it to my two grandchildren. Specifically, I appreciated the way Mr. Reich departed from the traditional model or scenario for children's "counting" books, namely counting animals who are either congregating or dispersing from one another. Graham's day begins with a look at his reflection in a mirror, but more captivating to him than his own image is how that mirror shines. Observational skills are needed as Graham begins his search for 10 shiny things. Creating a treasure hunt atmosphere, Mr. Reich brings the reader to the day's end where a disappointed Graham has fallen short of his goal. Oh, no, only 9! But wait, the author has a surprise for Graham and the reader, and not wanting to spoil the ending I'll say no more.....except to add that the illustrations like the tale itself are very well done and will definitely appeal to the young child. Yes, I am recommending this book.

This deceptively simple book is a great tool for teaching children to begin their journeys into mathematics. Instead of rote learning, Graham's Shiny Things uses objects children are accustomed to seeing and incorporates them into an entertaining format which any youngster can grasp immediately. This book is also great for showing than learning can be fun.

Terrific book for my 5-year old grandson

Terrific book for my 5-year old grandson. He liked the illustrations and the surprise at the end. After we read it, we went around the house and he found his own 10 things. An interesting take-off on the "I Spy" game which he loves to play. Good exercise to sharpen observation skills, and work directly with numbers.

Another Winner from Whittemore

Vanessa is a fashion-savvy young woman who you love from the first chapter. When a stylish new neighbor moves in, Vanessa has met her match. With the help of her friends, she has to learn an important lesson about true grace - which comes from more than clothes, shoes, and makeup.

I really enjoyed the humor, honestly, and characters. Whittemore's style is fun and light, but this book has a lot of heart. This is another strong entry in the Confidentially Yours series, and there's plenty to enjoy for both kids and adults.
