My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book together! We really loved how each page was a poem in itself, but also led the reader on an engaging (and educational) journey that connected his/her with their own life experiences. The book also includes some super cool NASA images of stars, planets, space, etc. and other neat illustrations. Well done!

Young readers who enjoy historical fiction as well as those who like a bit of fantasy in their reads will appreciate this outing. Those with no knowledge of the first book will have no problem hopping on this one with the inclusion of a recap in the first chapter. Expansive back matter, including an author's note, websites and age appropriate recommended reading, is a fine addition to this rollicking good time.

A fun way to learn about Abraham Lincoln and his family!

With Presidents’ Day being this week, it’s the perfect week to review this cute read that gives kids insight into President Lincoln and his family, along with a few other key players during the Civil War. I was excited to have my kids read this one to go along with our homeschool curriculum, and it didn’t disappoint.

What Fed My Addiction:

Goofy concept.
The whole concept of the kids going back in time via an app on their phones was just plain fun! And, of course, when the people in the past were exposed to such futuristic technology, they didn’t know what to think. Lots of wackiness ensued!

First families.
I have to admit that when I first started reading this book, I thought, “Well this book makes Mrs. Lincoln seem kind of crazy, and it makes Tad Lincoln look a bit hyperactive.” I doubted how true to life this was, especially since I assumed that the children of the time would be encouraged to be seen and not heard. But before I made too many judgments, I decided to flip to the back of the book to read the author’s notes. Well, it turns out that Potter based his book on information written by people who knew the family well (make sure to read those author notes to see what he has to say about it himself!). I was a bit shocked to hear about this side of the first family that we rarely hear about – after all, Lincoln was such a great president that it’s easy to forget that he had a homelife and that it might not have been perfect. I found this fascinating and it sparked some really interesting conversation between my daughter and I!

Perfect tone for MG.
The book description says that this book is for kids who enjoyed Magic Treehouse books but have grown out of them, and I found that to be absolutely true. My daughter loved the MT books when she was younger and I loved that she was learning from them. These books definitely have an older feel to them, but the voice is distinctly middle grade (boy). There were lots of references to video games (Clash of Clans, anyone?) and technology, and the MC sounded a lot like my thirteen-year-old son. My daughter really enjoyed reading this one, and I’m guessing my son will too when I manage to have him read it.

What Left Me Wanting More:

More history?
I would have personally liked a smattering more of the actual history. While there were definitely references to certain events in the final battle of the Civil War and we definitely got a solid impression of the Lincoln family and a few of the major military players, I would have loved to see a bit more about the whys and hows of the Civil War itself. Of course, my kids would probably disagree with me and think that more history would make it boring, but I still would have loved to see it.

This book would make a fun companion to any Civil War unit, but kids will appreciate it just for the entertainment value. We’ll definitely be picking up the first book (about George Washington) as well. This book did have some references to things that had happened in book one, but we didn’t feel too confused by jumping in on the second book. Still, you might want to pick up both! I give this book 4/5 stars.

Historically entertaining!

I read Abe Lincoln and the Selfie That Saved the Union by David Potter with my 9-year-old daughter and she bombarded me with questions throughout. This was her first introduction to the American Civil War, and while the book doesn’t go into the causes of the war, this book served as a brief introduction to the time (1863) and places (Washington City and Gettysburg). I ended up going way beyond the scope of the book in my discussions with my daughter – and it gave me a good opportunity for me to recite the Gettysburg Address, which I have had memorized since I was around my daughter’s age. Luckily, we don’t have to experience the blood and gore of that horrendous battle in this book, but we learn that it happened and some of the consequences (albeit in a very simplified description).

The story itself is exciting, flows nicely, has lots of variety, action, and entertaining dialogue. The three main characters and their interactions, especially with each other, are amusing to follow.

This is the second book in a cute series in which 3 students who had to stay at their boarding school over the holidays (thus being left behind), somehow received a time travel app on their phones (that part is probably explained in the first book), and travel through time trying to keep the bad guy (who invented the app but now wants to change history) from changing history. In this story they go to DC and try to stop the bad guy from changing the outcome of the battle of Gettysburg. Twelve year old Brandon tells the story of his adventures with his two classmates, Bev and Brandon. The story is meant to be funny and to share historical facts. I think it would appeal to children in grades 3 through 5. I received this book free to review from Netgalley.

Growing up in suburbia and rural areas I have no real knowledge about what it would be like to grow up in a city other than what

Books set in an urban setting are always intriguing to me. Growing up in suburbia and rural areas I have no real knowledge about what it would be like to grow up in a city other than what I’ve read in books and seen on cartoons and movies on TV, thus I’m always intrigued to experience such stories and now to share them with my own children. Girl & Gorilla Out and About is a fun story about two friends on their way to play at the park, but it seems to be taking so long to walk there and in an attempt to pass the time they come up with all sorts of traveling games. But the fun part is that do not seem to realize they are doing so and they entertain themselves on the way there and while they’re there and then it seems to start again on their way back home.

Fantastic all around

This book is so cute. I absolutely love it, and can't wait to share it with my young nieces. This book will be a top pick when purchasing birthday gifts for the young readers in my life. Rick Walton's crazy and unexpected sense of silliness begin on the first page, and the story holds up with the funniness of it's absurd gorilla, while focusing on the friendship that he has with Girl. This book was truly an enjoyable romp. This friendship story could even make it a great alternative pick for Valentine's Day, if you are looking for a book on friendship between two people, instead of love between a typical "couple." The illustrations also play along with the story, while telling one of their own - which adds to the enjoyment of repeated visits. Fantastic all around.

A worth reading book for kids

It was an attractive read as the whispers had stopped and it seemed that only one of them was saying something over and over again. I tried to focus on it. I looked over John’s shoulder to the door where they stood. One had moved forward and was the one making the noise. I had been so afraid that I didn’t see it move or hear its attempt at communicating with us. I couldn’t hear it very well. I shook my head then turned to look at it.

Realmente me gusto este libro. Hay algunas historias muy buenas. La mayoría es lo que podríamos llamar el calentamiento para el corazón. Me gusto La Primera Caminatade Jhonny y La Americana Arrogante. La Resurrección de Jock me recuerda a algunos de estos tipos que ya están viejos como con los que solía jugar al baloncesto. Tendrías que ser un tonto para dejar pasar este libro. Lo disfrute mucho.

Todas las historias de este libro son muy divertidas para leer. Me gustó mucho "El Esposo inteligente" y "El teléfono celular de mamá". "La resurrección de Jock", en particular, fue muy divertido. Mi favorito de todos fue "La Americana Arrogante" se capturaron muy bien las percepciones erróneas culturales.

Hilarious book with tons of detailed designs on good quality paper. The words took up most of the page with the variety of designs. My friends and I cut the pages out and colored swearwords I obviously can't write here lol. Nothing was too offensive (nothing racist or things I've seen in other books) but it was perfectly crude for a bunch of guys and girls who might otherwise think coloring was lame. This book was anything but boring and I for sure recommend this one!

Got this coloring book because it looked funny, but it was one of the best things ever. There are a lot of pages and the words are easy to color. I think somehow coloring in a swear word is more relaxing to me than some other designs. Thinking about buying a few for some of my friends and family.

It's so funny it seriously calms me down when I'm mad.
I can sit right next to the hubby & passive aggressively color lol.
The pages are heavy weight & nothing bled through to the next page when I used markers & I'm pretty heavy handed.
These are only one image per page, not the front & back like some of the other ones I've seen, I really like that.
It's just fun, making these crude words pretty!
I'll include some pictures of the tamer words & the ones I started when I was angry lol.
