A Beautiful Little Book for Children

I ordered this for a Christmas toy drive, and think it is a happy, colorful, and satisfying book that small children will love. It tells a story that has a lesson within but is not the least bit preachy, and the illustrations are wonderful. It's good to see new books like this for this age group. This one will leave a warm and fuzzy feeling that is sure to ensure sweet dreams.

This is a fun tale of the legendary biblical giant, Og, that young children will fall in love with ...

When Og the Giant was born, it soon would be obvious that he did everything in a BIG way. It wasn’t long before everyone in the village realized that he just wasn’t your average baby. When he cried everyone knew it and even “villagers miles away covered their ears to block out the noise.” Waaaaah! Waaaaah! It was so bad that even the mountains rained boulders into their valleys. And eat! Og had the biggest appetite in the land and gurgle, gurgle, gurgled, down buckets of milk. Og the Giant was a baby like no one had ever seen before or since that day he arrived.

Unfortunately Og was so big there was no bed that would ever fit him. Crunch! Chairs and beds simply collapsed beneath his weight and it wasn’t long “until his shoulders touched the top of the tallest cedar tree.” Og had to sleep on the ground, but there was no comfort for him. As the days passed, he grew grumpier, but he really had the “heart of a gentle giant.” Animals gathered ‘round him during those long nights seeking shelter in everything from his busy beard to the arches of his BIG feet. All the animals chattered away until they “nodded off to sleep ... except Og.”

Noah noticed that Og had a love for the animals and came to him saying, “A Great Flood is coming soon.” It was no concern of Og’s because he was too BIG to drown in a flood, but Noah needed him to gather the animals. “God’s other creatures are not so lucky,” Noah had explained and Og, the gentle giant, agreed to help. The storm was approaching and it looked like a bad one with heavy rain and winds. It looked like Og would need some help, but he didn’t fit in Noah’s ark. Could he weather the storm on the top of the ark or would he drown during the deluge?

This is a fun tale of the legendary biblical giant, Og, that young children will fall in love with. Og has a wonderful personality that not only appeals to the innocent creatures of the Earth, but to young and old alike. The character is based on Og, the King of Bashan, a king discussed in the Author’s Note. He’s a grumpy sort of fellow, only because no one can really understand him. In his heart, he’s a loving giant that children can easily relate to. Og will teach children that it’s not always what people look like that counts, but rather what is in their hearts. The artwork is beautifully rendered and, at times, is rather humorous when Og is that BIG baby. A fun blended tale that is a uniquely special one.

What would you do if you were a giant who just wanted to sleep in a nice cozy bed? That’s all Og wanted to do. Og came into the world when God separated the earth from the sky. When he cried forests swayed and when he cooed boulders fell from mountain tops. It took the milk of 100 cows and goats to feed him. It wasn’t long before he grew and broke all of the beds that were made for him from the tallest cedar trees. Sleeping on the ground was uncomfortable especially when the animals decided to snuggle up on and around him. One day Noah came to him and told him about the ark he must build. He knew that Og had a way with the animals and he wanted him to gather one male and one female of every kind throughout the land. Once the rains came Og was forced to ride on top of the ark because he was too big to fit inside. And still Og got no sleep. When the rain stopped and the ark was on land Noah asked Og how he could repay him for all of his help. Og replied, “All I want is a good night’s sleep in my own bed.” Noah looked up to the heavens and said, “Perhaps God will reward you for your good deed.” Do you think Og got what he wanted?

Authors Allison and Wayne Marks have spun a tale from the biblical character of Og, the King of Bashan. Vivid illustrations by Martina Peluso add a softness to this story making it perfect for bedtime or a read-a-loud in a classroom. Marvelous Book!

This is one book that is fun to read with the company of children in the family. At the age of 2-8, children will appreciate pets and will be encouraged to have a pet to take care of. This book also teaches good values to children because people who are pet lovers are kind and sensitive people. Giving children pets at a young age will help them develop that caring personality and mindful of other people's feelings. My nephew enjoyed listening this story while I read it to him. I wanted to give him this book as a birthday gift but his birthday will be in a few months so I decided to sit down with him and read this book together. I'm glad he liked the story!

A good, fun read!

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were complex but relatable, and the story had good conflict but was also fun. There were quite a few times when I laughed out loud. Highly recommend it for anyone who likes a good, fun read!

Teen love and woe skillfully presented

Suzy Blue's story is one that sticks with you. Nevermind the typical teenage misery of school, boys, mean girls and divorced parents Suzy has SO much more to deal with! Overall a great read with a clean flow to the story. I honestly didn't like the ending but could see the set up for a future novel...which I know I would read too.

Great story that brought you right into Suzy's life. I liked how the relationship between Suzy and J.J. evolved. This book includes a girl, a boy and storyline you can relate to. I recommend this book to all young adult readers looking for a fast paced read.

This wide-eyed, magical tale by distinguished author Alice Hoffman reflects the pale blue hue of two 12-year-old friends about to be parted at summer's end. Gr 5-6-Hailey and Claire, along with Raymond the snack-counter guy, are the only people who spend time at the Capri Beach Club, which has fallen on hard times. The best friends are ruefully counting down the days until Claire moves to Florida with her grandparents. When a storm washes a bad-mannered mermaid named Aquamarine into the club pool, she falls in love with Raymond and begs the girls to help her win his heart. They agree, on the condition that she returns to the sea after her "date" with him. This book has some wonderful elements-there is some vivid imagery, especially when it comes to the setting, with its waves of heat and air of decay. There are also some lovely balances between the girls as they gradually exchange roles as either brave or clever, and they seem to take turns accepting the girl who will inevitably move in next door. Unfortunately, the narration puts too much space between readers and the story, leaving them unengaged. There is also the more practical question of why the beach club is still open even though Claire and Hailey are the only two who come each day. Finally, one of the things that Hoffman seems to do best in her adult novels is leisurely create characters that can walk right out of the story. She doesn't have the time or space here to do that and the result, sadly, is a very boring mermaid and two dull girls suffering from separation anxiety.-Patricia A. I am a fifth grade student at Waldron Mercy Academy (A.N.C.-L.). This book was a real page-turner. It had a mix of suspense, happiness, and sea creatures. On a hot day at the Capri Beach Club, Hailey and Claire are spending time together. The girls are sad because Claire is moving to Florida at the end of the month. Soon, the Capri will be knocked down. The day after a storm Hailey and Claire visit the pool. They are not allowed in, (Claire is scared of swimming) but they go anyway! In the pool, they find a rude sixteen year old mermaid. She is lost and in love. Claire sews her a beautiful dress (Claire likes sewing), and Hailey sets up a date for her. After the date she starts drying out and dying. Will Hailey and Claire get her to the ocean before she dies? Read the rest of the book to find out. This book was so good that my mommy called me for dinner at 5:00p.m. and I didn't go down until 5:30p.m. This book really deserves a five star rating.

A gem of a little book

A book about two best friends about to be separated by miles and time is a definite catch for me to read. And it's an unforgettable read. When the two girls discovered a mermaid at the bottom of a pool, the girls (Claire and Hailey) did everything they could to help Aquamarine meet her true love, a boy named Ray.
It is a whimiscal & delightful read. It's a wonderful little book to add to everyone's library. Hoffman turns an old legend into modern day prose ~~ but the reader will fall in love with the characters and the siren song of the mermaid.

A sweet little coming-of-age novel (check that, NOVELETTE), is a nice read and good diversion, by the author of Oprah Book Club "Here on Earth" (though I doubt anyone reading this book will care diddly). Though a bit too short and a bit too shallow, it's sweet.
Twelve-year-old neighbors Hailey and Claire have been best buddies all their lives, but this summer is the last they will be able to hang out together. Claire will be moving to Florida, and this hangs a pall over their fun. A nearby club will also shut down at the end of summer, a place that they know and enjoy.
But what happens when a mermaid is washed ashore? Aquamarine is not your typical Little Mermaid type, being both cranky and lovelorn. Despite the fact that land-based life will destroy her, Aquamarine falls in love with a local boy (I didn't see his charm, personally). Hailey and Claire manage to smuggle her about in a wheelchair -- but how can they help her survive, if she doesn't want to go back?
It's a nice little book, with excellent descriptions of the local areas. Unfortunately, Aquamarine was the only truly interesting character, as Hailey and Claire are typical book-kids who could be lifted from any other book. Their bright spot is the separation anxiety, which is often reserved mainly for parents. But things simply happen, with little insight into the characters' thoughts.
I also found the shortness of this novel distracting -- there are a fair number of pages, but there are very few lines per page, and the omniscient voice of the narrator destroys some opportunities to initiate more character development (telling us stuff about Aquamarine's background rather than having HER tell Claire and Hailey and US).
I advise younger kids to read this book, but middle grade and older readers will find themselves severely frustrated.

Very nice read.

They sure had fun and new experiences and adventures on their journey. They looked out for one another and their friendships strengthened as they faced their fears and conquered their challenges.
