About the Author
Catherine Jinks grew up in Papua New Guinea and now resides in New South Wales, Australia. She is a three-time winner of the Children's Book Council of Australia Book of the Year award and has received the Centenary Medal for her contribution to Australian children's literature. Her popular works for young readers include the Evil Genius series, The Reformed Vampire Support Group, and the trilogy that began with How to Catch a Bogle.

“The Last Bogler” concludes Catherine Jinks’ imaginative series that incorporates elements of the supernatural within a historical setting. Alfred Bunce, a “Go-Devil Man” and his young apprentice bogle-hunters Jem and Ned, who serve as bait when hunting the bogles, have been hired by London’s Metropolitan Board of Works to rid the city of the bogle infestation. Demonic creatures living in sewers, bogles snatch young children who then seem to disappear forever.
Reading this book, you will find yourself transported back to Victorian England, its streets and the life of orphaned children as they search for any means of earning money. You will experience the atmosphere of the London theater, of the workings of a government committee, and of an orphan’s opportunities for education and advancement. Catherine Jinks‘ novel “The Last Bogler” (“How to Catch a Bogle” and “A Plague of Bogles” precede the third novel of this series.) weaves three different elements together to create an imaginative, exciting story. The battle of good against evil continues in this captivating book.
“The Last Bogler” incorporates appealing characters as well as depicting their social status and occupational roles in a true-to-life manner. Throughout the book, Catherine Jinks evokes the atmosphere and attitudes of the era and of the social classes and their respective relationships. Detailed descriptions of the locale and of the characters’ homes and garments enhance the story.
Language and words add an authentic flavor to conversations and the narrative. Since “The Last Bogler” incorporates a number of words specific to the story, the author includes a helpful glossary in the back of the novel for readers’ benefit. This novel does not reach for the lowest common denominator of readership. It recognizes that young readers are more sophisticated and discerning than many novels targeted the 9 – 12 year old age group do. Nevertheless and because of the target group's level of maturity, the plot and the overall story are more likely to appeal to this age group rather than to older readers.
Like any novel that concludes a series should do, “The Last Bogler” wraps up the stories of each individual who played a significant role in the three novels. Only the concluding few pages involving Mr. Bunce provide a surprising element and one that allows Catherine Jinks, should she decide to do so, to continue the tale.

Ages 11 to 13

While we (me and the 10 year old in the family and even the now 14 year old who began the series when he was 12) wish Birdie and Jem had more page time in this 3rd book in the series it was great reading Ned's story and being transported back to Victorian London. We both got hooked on the series from the first book:
HOW TO CATCH A BOGLE (2013): 10 year old orphan Birdie McAdam is tougher than she looks. She's proud of her job as apprentice to Alfred the Bogler, a man who catches monsters for a living. Birdie lures the bogles out of their lairs with her sweet songs, and Alfred kills them before they kill her. On the mean streets of Victorian England, hunting bogles is actually less dangerous work than mudlarking for scraps along the vile river Thames. (See glossary!) Or so it seems—until the orphans of London start to disappear . . .My review from 2013: Although the child in the story is a 10 year old I think the subject matter might be creepier than some parents might want for their pre-teens. Top drawer writing, Excellent world building, believable characters, creepy story. Set on the truly mean streets of Victorian era London, England circa 1870. Make sure to note the glossary at the end that is super helpful. Catherine Jinks is the author of the 'Evil Genius' and 'Pagan' series. Birdie McAdam is a homeless orphan, and one tough 10 year old. If you have ever watched the TV show from 1995 to 2001 Xena Warrior Princess Birdie is the Gabrielle character - courageous - smart and plucky. She's apprentice to Alfred the Bogler, the monster catcher. Birdie is monster bait. Bogles like to eat little children. She sweetly sings that lures the monsters to her (they lurk in every dark scary place you imagine). Then Alfred kills them (with a spear)- hopefully before they eat her. The only other option for Birdie is 'mud-larking' the river Thames - a filthy river in that era. That, or the workhouse (think sweatshops of that era). Until wealthy Miss Eames offers to make Birdie her ward, in exchange for learning everything Birdie knows, so that Miss Eames can devise a way to rid the bogles without danger to the lures. With orphans disappearing right and left are the bogles to blame or could it be humans are to blame?
A Plague of Bogles (2014): Jem Barbary spent most of his early life picking pockets for a wily old crook named Sarah Pickles—until she betrayed him. Now Jem wants revenge, but first he needs a way to earn his living. He’d like to work for the bogler Alfred Bunce, who kills the child-eating monsters that lurk in the cellars and sewers of old London. But Alfred has wanted to give up bogling ever since he almost lost his last apprentice, Birdie McAdam. As more and more children disappear under mysterious circumstances, though, Alfred, Jem, and Birdie find themselves waging an underground war. Soon they discover that there’s only one thing more terrifying than facing a whole plague of bogles: facing the sinister people from Jem’s past . . .

A great end to a fun and scarey series

This is the third and last book in the “Bogler” series by Catherine Jinks. I enjoyed both the first and second books just as well as this one and I recommend reading them in order to get the most out of the series. The book picks up shortly after the events of the second book in the series. The series concludes in a really interesting and satisfying manner and one that I was not expecting.
In this story, the bogler assistants are Ned and Jem although Birdie is still at hand. The focus of this book is on Ned (the first book was about Birdie and the second one was about Jem.) These are the children who act as “bait” to lure out the bogles (the children-eating monsters that infest London underground.) The story is definitely on the scarey side with a lot of sticky and icky things to satisfy those kids who love this type of story. As with the rest of the series, there is a bit of slang used in the book but there is a small dictionary of these terms at the end of the book to help young readers along.
I mentioned this in my last review, I would love to see this series turned into a series of movies. The author has done a great job of describing the setting, events and characters. I can almost visualize the whole thing in my head. I will miss the series but look forward to more books by this author in the future.
The book is a fitting end to a series that I enjoyed. I would suggest parents read the book first before letting young children have a go at it. It seems like it might be better for the age ten and up group.
