Lea Thorbecke is a retired special education teacher and accomplished writer of children's books. Born in Israel, educated there and in Switzerland, she now resides in Northeast Georgia. She keeps her Dutch husband, Herman Thorbecke, busy editing (co-authoring) her copious writing. She is relentless!

Philosophy for kids and engaged and involved adult mentors

Philosophy for kids? Yep. This is an ABC book in that the chapters involve animals in an alphabetical organization, but it is not your usual ABC book, and it might not be for pre-schoolers. I speculate that not only children but many adult readers will meet some animals they knew nothing about before. The black and white illustrations are delightful and well-fit to the stories. The book is designed to raise issues of ethics and morality, and each chapter presents some questions to get the discussion started. Therein lies an important point: although the book is written in simple enough language that early readers can read it alone and respond to the questions, it is designed to be read with an adult who can guide the discussion with open-ended questions. I Wonder Why? is an excellent choice for parents or teachers who are up for this challenging and interesting interaction.

Engaging children with intrigue and curiosity - in a fun and illustrative way.

I Wonder Why? is a brilliant story telling book for young children that invitingly questions the morals of diverse situations. With an empathetic eye and intriguing philosophical questions it entices a collaborative exchange between child and teacher/story teller. This book with its engaging stories and fun illustrations should be a requirement in all early childhood education. I loved the book and found it to be a great bedtime story extravaganza for me and my young nephew's.

Bravo!

As the principal of a charter school that strives to build critical thinking skills and social learning into its curriculum, I was pleased to find this gem. It is difficult to find age appropriate material for primary school students that does not shy away from the difficult issues first encountered and considered during the primary school years. I am also pleased to know that our students, and possibly our staff, will be looking up creatures not previously encountered in their learning.
