Six Feet Over It, by Jennifer Longo

This unforgettable new voice in contemporary YA is perfect for fans of John Green, Libba Bray, and Jennifer Niven.

“Like nothing you’ve read before.” —Bustle.com

No one is more surprised than Leigh when her father buys a graveyard. Less shocking is the fact that he’s too lazy to look farther than the dinner table for employees. Working the literal graveyard shift, she becomes great at predicting headstone choice (mostly granite) and taking notes with one hand while offering Kleenex with the other.

Sarcastic and smart, Leigh should be able to quit this stupid after-school job. But her world’s been turned upside down by the sudden loss of her best friend and the appearance of Dario, the slightly-too-old-for-her gravedigger. Can Leigh move on, if moving on means it’s time to get a life?

Funny and heart-wrenchingly beautiful, Jennifer Longo’s YA debut about a girl surrounded by death will change the way you look at friendship, love, and life.

From School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up—Instead of returning home at the end of a summer spent with their grandparents, Leigh and her older sister Kai receive two one-way bus tickets to Hangtown, CA. Their father has bought a graveyard and the family is moving. For the past three years, Leigh has been a stalwart support system for Kia while she battled cancer, and although the cancer is now in remission, Kai's health feels tenuous. And there's Emily, Leigh's best friend, who died over the summer. Her parents are neglectful and disengaged, and her father expects her to work after school in the graveyard office. Longo has crafted a complicated and multilayered narrative, the root of which is the story of a young girl who feels that death follows her. Leigh's aggressive sarcasm is at first off-putting, but soon it becomes clear that it masks a lot of pain. She resists making friends because she feels that being friends with her is to invite the specter of death. Leigh's worst fears are confirmed when Dario, the 20-year-old Mexican immigrant who works at the cemetery (and Leigh's crush), tells her that her birthday, November 1st, is the Day of the Dead in Mexico. Dario says she is like La Caterina, patron saint of the dead. It is through Dario's friendship, Kai's love, and the intrepid perseverance of Elanor, a girl who desperately wants to be her friend, that Leigh emerges from her grief and solidly joins the world of the living. An impressive debut novel—simultaneously hilarious, clever, and poignant.—Ragan O'Malley, Saint Ann's School, Brooklyn, NY

A Witty and Heartbreaking Debut Novel
By Stephanie Ward
3.5 Stars

'Six Feet Over It' is a witty and fun look at the very real and terrible subject of death. The book follows our heroine, Leigh, who has been uprooted from her life in California - only to be moved to a small town in the middle of nowhere. To make matters even worse - her father, Wade, sells graves and headstones - and Leigh's house is basically inside the cemetery. Forced to work at the business's office after school, Leigh learns inevitable truths about people and death. She tries to keep her spirits up and maintain a witty demeanor, but Leigh can only stay strong for so long until she breaks.

I have to admit that this book was nothing like what I was expecting when I picked it up. I figured it would be a regular contemporary YA novel where the main character had some growth, realizations, and romance. What I got instead was a witty and charming novel that deals with some of the deepest issues in life - grieving, friendship, love, and death. It sounds almost conflicting to describe a book in this way, but somehow the author managed to pull it off. And it's a debut - that was a huge surprise for me when I found out! Leigh is a strong main character for the book. She's smart, sarcastic, and a fantastic example of a normal teenage girl today. I loved her witty inner dialogues and musings, although at times it felt a bit over the top. Maybe because I'm not a teenager and I couldn't fully relate to it all. I did get annoyed with Leigh a few times throughout the book, but that made her realistic to me - because, honestly, we all get irritated with other people now and again. The author did a fantastic job of demonstrating all the dysfunction in Leigh's life - from her family to living and working at a cemetery - and everything in between. There is a bit of romance in the book, which helped to alleviate the heaviness of the topics being discussed. I thought that was a great way to help balance things out for Leigh's character. The writing was phenomenally done with a natural pace and a conversational tone that made it a breeze to read. It did take a little longer than usual for me to connect with Leigh and immerse myself into the story. This is probably due to the issues I mentioned before about her sometimes over the top inner dialogue and attitude. Once I slipped into the story, I found it to be an easy and quirky book that somehow manages to talk about death and all the heavy details that go along with it, and yet still have an overall upbeat and fun attitude. This book won't be for everyone, but I definitely recommend it for fans of contemporary YA fiction and those looking for an original and unique story.

Sad, morbid and thought-provoking
By Evie Seo
Six Feet Over It is a story about a girl surrounded by death who is still trying to learn how to deal with loss. Death, in fact, is the recurring theme of this book, but it's life and learning how to live that is the essence of it. Thoughtful, poignant and undeniably hypnotizing, Six Feet Over It is a tale about loss, grief, family, friends, letting go, finding happiness and opening your heart.

I'll be honest with you and admit that I did not, initially, like the passive-aggressive tone of this book. The first-person narrative was very dark, sarcastic, dripping with perpetual sadness and negativity, and I couldn't really understand why (but only at first). Some of Leigh's remarks and inner thoughts were genuinely amusing and clever, but the majority of them came across as very bitter and depressing ("Every single moment I've been alive is directly related to and for the sole purpose of celebrating, defining, facilitating death.")

Leigh is 14 years old (when the story begins) and forced not only to live in a graveyard, but also to work in the office there, selling coffins and resting spaces to people who just lost someone they loved. This is not an ideal environment for a very young teenage girl to grow up in and I can definitely understand and relate to her objections towards this kind of lifestyle. In fact, the more I read about her and the more I got to know her, her past and current situation, the more I sympathized with her. There is so much more to her character than meets the eye. She's snarky and seemingly negative about everything, because she's been badly burned before. She learned to guard herself, and this whole "I am cursed, back off" and "I don't want anything to do with anyone" attitude is just an act - a wall she built around her heart to protect it from being ripped open again. Between her sister's leukemia and their family starting a graveyard business, she's just exhausted - mentally and physically. And there's more, but to elaborate on that would be to spoil it for you.

"I'm not sure how else to convince her I am not a good candidate for friendship. I've been dismissive at best, at worst unkind, but she doesn't seem discouraged. At all.
Her impossible likeness to Emily is strange and awful and not her fault, but still here she is, a Lego brick fit of an Emily replacement and I cannot. I will not.
I'm not good friend material.
I'm not good person material".
(quote from a finished copy)

In fact, Leigh is kind of a human-onion. The more layers you peel off, the more amazed you are by what you discover underneath, until before you know it, you're crying your heart out for her. Because, truth be told, she's a wonderful, caring, intelligent, loving, thoughtful, humble girl who would rather wear one pair of pink sweatpants forever and be mocked for it and laughed at, than to bother her parents about it and steal their attention from her sick sister. Yes, she is that kind of person and by the end of the story I loved her like a sister.

I enjoyed the first 3/4 of the story immensely, but the ending fell a bit flat for me. It was a good ending - inspiring, hopeful, positive - but I didn't think it brought all the answers I was looking forward to, and that kind of made me sad and disappointed. Not to mention that I sort of thought the entire story would go in a different direction all together and when that didn't happen, well, I guess I was a bit surprised.

While the overall theme of this book is rather sad and dark, the message it carries is a positive and meaningful one. Embracing death, learning to grieve without punishing yourself for all the what-ifs and if-onlys, allowing yourself to be happy - these are just some of the very important messages conveyed in this book. All in all, Six Feet Over It is a heartfelt, remarkably well-written, sharp and powerful debut novel. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys complex, multi-layered characters, meaningful plot-lines and dark, clever sense of humor.

I was good but not what I thought.
By Melissa Martin's Reading List Blog
I didn't love this one as much as Up To This Pointe and I really thought I would because it's about a girl that lives in a graveyard with her parents and sister. I mean it sounded so good, but I just can't put my finger on why this wasn't a 5 start book like the other one.

Maybe this is one I should re-read a little later to make sure it wasn't just my mood. I just feel like it is a book I would love and maybe I missed something, I really don't know. But, there are a lot of little things I did love about the book and I will let others find those little gems themselves.

I hope someone loves this book more than I did because that is all that matters, falling in love with a book. ♥
