Illustrator Lee Lorenz (Ava's dad) is the renowned author, illustrator, cartoonist and former Art Editor of The New Yorker. Although no longer married to each other, they continue to love and parent Ava together. This is a collaboration in honor of Ava's 21st birthday.

This a love-filled book with an empowering message. So many of our kids experience anxiety, in this book, Ava finds her own strong way to combat the jitters. I recommend this book for any child grappling with anxiety or any fear.

Gr 3-5-This handsome picture-book biography explains how a pampered, privileged child grew up to be our 32nd president, serving longer than any other president in U.S. history. Krull tells readers, "He had long blond curls and wore dresses with fancy lace collars till he was almost six." His parents indulged his every wish and were quick to forgive any mischief, yet instilled a social conscience in their golden boy from an early age, urging him to "Help the helpless!" After a sheltered childhood of homeschooling, Franklin left for boarding school at age 14. Despite his parents' plans for him to be a gentleman like his father, he was inspired to enter the world of politics by the headmaster at Groton; his cousin Teddy; and his future wife, Eleanor. Stricken with polio at 39, Franklin struggled to regain his strength, reentering the political arena three years later. An epilogue explains the stock market crash, Great Depression, New Deal, fireside chats, and World War II. Filled with anecdotes and quotes, the text is concise and engaging, working well as a read-aloud or for independent reading. The rich, impressionistic oil and ink illustrations capture the spirit of the man and his time. Less wordy and more attractive than Judith St. George and Britt Spencer's Make Your Mark, Franklin Roosevelt (Philomel. 2007), this offering also covers more of the subject's life. Echoing the overall theme and presenting, by and large, the same material, this purposeful picture-book biography follows Judith St. George’s Make Your Mark, Franklin Roosevelt (2007) in tracing FDR’s path from birth (“All children like to think they’re the center of their universe. But a boy named FDR really was”) and schooling (“When he was put in charge of a dorm, he was a good leader, compassionate toward the new boys—the way he wished he’d been treated”) into public life. Awarding nods to the early influences of parents, a particular tutor, a schoolmaster, and cousin Teddy’s “zesty leadership,” Krull closes with FDR’s triumphant 1924 return to public life after being stricken with polio, summarizes the accomplishments of his later presidency, and ends with a combined list of dates and quotations. The figures in the large illustrations have a staid look, but FDR strikes appropriately heroic poses, and his outsize personality comes through clearly. Despite being a little loose in its chronology, this makes an acceptable introduction to our longest-serving president. Grades 3-5. --John Peters

a fun read that didn't give that “biography” feel to it ...

This was a lengthy and informative picture book about FDR, focusing on his childhood but briefly covering other major events in his life on his way to the presidency; a fun read that didn't give that “biography” feel to it that some readers may avoid. The illustrations were stunning and perfect representation of the time. A Boy Named FDR will inspire students to do further research on this very affable man that called the White House home longer than any other.

Picture book biographies are a great way to introduce real people to the younger crowd. However, when using them, one needs to realize that they are not complete in any way (as if any biography could be), and they often tend to focus on the good points of the subject. Such is the case here. Krull does a nice job of giving the reader a look at FDR's privileged childhood. As an only child, FDR usually got what he wanted. His determined nature helped him weather rejection. I appreciated the writing which was easy to read and would be great for a read-a-loud. The illustrations help place the story in its historical setting. The timeline at the back is great for reports, as is the list of additional references. Overall, a good introduction to a very influential man and the characteristics and experiences that helped make him the man he became. Recommended.

Exemplary Book about Franklin D. Roosevelt's young life

This is a wonderful picture book about FDR, and I will definitely keep this book handy in my classroom. It is very accessible and tells some great stories from the young FDR's life. The book ends when he becomes president. The pictures in the book are wonderful and tell a great story in themselves and help support the text very well. Highly recommended.

Sweet story with a serious message

Very sweet story about making a seemingly bad situation into something that works for your good. I especially liked that the boy in the story was the one who figured out the solution to what at first was a disappointment. Don't let a bad situation destroy you! My son liked the story because it is about pumpkins. I like being able to teach a life lesson.

On its surface, it is a one-to-ten counting book, illustrated with bright, simple pictures in saturated colors and heavy black outlines. Precise die cuts in every other page add another level of sophistication. On a two-page spread, text on the left identifies what’s to be counted—“THREE APES,” for example— while a die cut in the right-hand page exposes a picture of the subject through the hole. Turn the page, and the die cut frames a piece of the text from the previous spread, incorporating it into a new phrase that spells out a new situation—“BIG ESCAPE”—that is illustrated on the opposite page. And if that weren’t enough, the final spread links the entire book together with a string of consecutive images that is delightfully surprising. Fun, creative, a True Delight!

Our two and half year old loves this book and it's been a favorite of my wife an I too. Each page has a clever cutout over the picture, which when turned reveals some fanciful addition to what the subject is. Example: 3 Apes, (you see their heads mostly) then turns to Big Escape, in which you see they happily got out of their cage. Each picture and number up to ten goes like this and all are quite fun for everyone. Beautiful production and printing quality too.

Learning to read and count at the same time in one book for one boy

This was an amazing book. I am teaching my grand son to read/count and learn English all in one book. Pictures are very good, all very memorable. Peek-a-boo aspect of the book appeals to the children. It is a real page turner for young children. Highly recommended.

One Boy is a great book for children and adults of all ages. One Boy is very simple but the way the illustrations are put down looks great. For example, for the number one it says one boy and when you turn the page it says all alone and the picture extends. Most of the pictures are animals. I would definitely recommend this book to children and adults.

About the Author
Jenny Fuller is a wife, mother of one daughter and the grandmother of two grandsons. She began painting in 1974 but didn't begin writing and recording her stories until her first grandson was born in 2002. This is the first book published but hopefully many more are to come. Every night when the grandsons would stay at her house, she would always read to them but soon they wanted her to tell them one of "her" stories. Every year since their births she has written stories, poems and songs for them. Hopefully you will enjoy this book as much as she enjoyed writing and illustrating it.

Steve Creepers was born in Perth, Australia. He grew up in a modern day family with his parents divorcing before his mother remarried and he was introduced to all things gaming by his step-father. This book reads easy and very informative

This book reads easy and very informative. When I first started to play Minecraft with my children I was lost and frustrated that in survival mode we' would have such troubles finding villages. After some google research I discovered seeds and what they were and what they did.. This takes the time out of running around vulnerable looking for a village to explore for resources. I read the ebook then attempted to us the seeds on Minecraft PE which I found they weren't compatible with. was kinda disappointing but Steve does say each platforms are different and results for each with vary. The Seeds did work with xbox 360. I do wish you would have listed with each seed what platform it was for, others wise a great read for those wanting to try out seeds.
