Very well written - accessible, practical and enabling for the watercolour beginner as well as those of us who have been mucking about for some time without fully understanding the medium! The photos really do bring the commentary to life and I particularly like the ring-bound, sketch-pad device. The use of Jelly Beans to describe the concept of focal point is genius! I look forward to working my way though this very enjoyable 6 week course and I wish Eleanor success with this and other e-books to come :)

Intelligent and Provocative Prose for Pre-Teens

Contemporary. Absorbing. Insightful. Reflective. Dramatic. Humorous. These are just a few adjectives that can be heaped on this excellent novel for children. Ms. Paterson has written a book that can stand the test of time with its multiple themes: conflict resolution, facing reality, the universal need by all for security, and to a lesser degree, the inhumanity of man to man. As Gilly may have put it, "This is one damn good book!'
As I began to read the selection, I was unnerved somewhat by Gilly's frequent uses of profanity. I thought this be unsuitable in a book intended for children. However, as I progressed, I realized that his provided the reader with an essential character trait of the young lady. From years of being shuffled from one home to another, Gilly had become angry and mistrusting of others. Her language and actions were defense mechanisms she used to cope with her feelings of unworthiness.
I could relate to the child's prejudices because as an African-American, I have been witness to some of the same ignorance possessed by the story's central character. It is admirable of the author to include such thinking for it promotes discussion about how we see each other.
The supporting characters are memorable and well developed. From the kindness of the overweight Maime Trotter to the poetry-reciting blind Mr. Randolph, the "people" in the story are so realistically portrayed that the reader cannot help but have concern for them. Honestly speaking, I almost shed a tear when Gilly had to leave her new "family."
Speaking of Gilly, the young lady changes from an angry child to a loving individual who discovers that life is not always the way it's supposed to be.
In an era when foster families and abandoned children abound, this book speaks to all of us. It shows how important the family unit is, how children need support, and how we are dependent on each other.
Such a simple message this is, unfortunately, forgotten by most.

5th grade class captivated with Gilly's life and personality

We are class 5T in Holland Elementary School in Holland, Massachusetts. We read The Great Gilly Hopkins for our second literature study book of the year. Our age group is from 10 to 11 years.
Gilly Hopkins is about an angry foster child who has a history of moving through many foster homes. She arrives at Maime Trotter's house hating her foster mother. During her stay at Trotter's house, Gilly learns love, self-control, and respect for others.
This is what we liked about the book. We became emotionally touched by Gilly's situation. Some of us cried while we read the book. Gilly was an interesting character because she changed from having hostile feelings for others to being a loving person. Some of us thought the author used vivid vocabulary that made Gilly seem real and interesting.
There are a few things we did not like about the book. Some of us thought the ending was sad. Gilly uses a lot of swears, and some of us didn't approve of that. There wasn't a lot of action in the story. People who like adventure stories might not like Gilly Hopkins.

The main character Gilly Hopkins is a self centered unloved 6th grader. In less than 3 years, she's been moved to 3 foster homes. When she meets her new foster family, which consists of a fat lady, named Trotter, a punny retarded 7-year-old William Ernest and a blind black old man Randolph. She tries lots of things to get away from them and the old run down house. She even steals, cleans and gives William Ernest reading lessons. She does all that hard work just to get caught. The one-day she gets taken away to live with her grandma and then she realizes how much she loves and misses her foster Family. Then she meets her real mom and finds out she doesn't love her. Next she figures out that the Trotters love her and she loves them.
I thought it was great how Gilly changed so much and how she learned it was okay to be loved and love. I really enjoyed when she was teaching William Ernest how to fight and stand up for himself and I need to learn how to stand up for myself. I thought it was a wonderful book with lots of detail and feelings that a kid might feel in their everyday life.

Great for Minecraft players!

If you enjoy playing Minecraft, then this is the perfect book for you. The author will teach you the in's and out's of the game that has captured the hearts of several of our kids in this generation. There are tips and strategies on how to last a night in the Minecraft world. Plus tips on potions that can be used as well in the game. My kids love this book and it's been great seeing them reading and playing around with their imagination.

My cousins play Minecraft and as a small gift I gave them this handbook combined with a kindle :). After seeing them so excited I just had to go through it myself, I am by far not a fan of minecraft but the passion people have for this game is heartwarming. Great followup on an excellent new series!

A really excellent story, this is a quick and easy read that follows up on the first book in the series and shows the story of the guardian of the underworld, a young man named Jake. Much like the stories of Narnia, he goes into the underworld as an outsider and has many journeys as the story progresses. He is tasked with the unenviable job of saving the city, and along the way he gains a number of friends who help him on this journey.

And it is quite a journey. It is fun and fantastical, with attacks from spiders, dragons, and many other creatures that will keep young readers on the proverbial edge of their seat as they read. I must confess, once I started reading this tale I couldn't stop until I had finished it because it flows so well together and is excellent.

Highly recommended, and a natural pick for anyone who read the first book in the series! If you are a fan of the Narnia stories and want an action packed story that is hopeful and filled with light humour, than this is the novel for you!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Book of Light, and I expect any young teen would too. Jake learnt in a previous book that his family is established as guardians of an entrance to the underworld, where goblins and various creatures live. I didn't read that book so I had to pick up the story as I went. Jake has to go on a long quest through the other world and he brings two friends, Will and Arianna, who keep his spirits up and ask him about the underworld as they go. A goblin menace is around so a competent, if not very friendly, guard called Ferdinand is sent to support the team. But abruptly Jake gets separated and life is much harder alone.

The descriptions of the environments are vivid and make the tale much more exciting. Some fun and interesting elements include magical rivers, each with an effect on anyone who touches it or drinks from it. Travellers do well to note which river is which. As the travel includes swimming and rafting, Jake and pals can't help being affected. Another new element is a herd of intelligent and extremely fast horses, who don't mind being ridden in a good cause and make the journey go swiftly. Any horse lovers will enjoy this aspect.

Some parts of the tale get scary, like being hunted through a forest, or facing an enemy in a battle arena. But it wouldn't be a real quest if it was too easy, and others besides Jake want to get their hands on the magical Book of Light. I am pleased that a book is shown to have power in the tale, rather than a weapon or symbol of kingship like a crown. The survival skills described are also useful. While the pace is fast, the author seems to expect that readers will be following her tale over a few sessions of reading; she has a brief recap every now and then as Jake goes over how he arrived in the current situation and makes his plans. So I think this is ideal for young adults from nine to mid-teens and probably for a lot of older readers too.

An exciting adventure in a magical world!

Before reading Rachel Tetley’s Book of Light, I had forgotten how much fun a good fantasy novel can be. Indeed, Tetley’s book is fantasy, but it is wonderfully colored by themes of drama, adventure, and romance. And if you think that Book of Light is suitable for children only, I will contend that Tetley can charm readers of all ages.

This story opens in the real world, and we quickly begin to get a picture of Jake, a likeable boy who has inherited the responsibility for guarding the Underworld. As the story builds, the author smartly “reaches back” to the previous novel in this series so that the reader never misses a beat. (Having not read the previous novels in the series, I had been concerned that I would be missing some important details.) We also get a glimpse of the fantastical with Jake’s pet Goblin Bruce, an interesting device that builds a bridge from the real world to the Underworld. The first chapter continues on to both set the stage for a fantastical adventure, but recalls important details from the previous novels, usually through Jake’s reflection.

By contrast, Chapter 2 is set in the Underworld, and a fantastical journey begins. Complete with castles and mythical creatures, the reader is taken to a Narnia-like wonderland, where Lucifer is building a powerful Army. Jake, along with friends Arianna and Will, must now find the Book of Light in order to stop him. As this rather epic fantasy continues, the reader is introduced to some of the most incredible creatures. Dragons, spiders, and furry forest denizen creatures thrill the reader all along the way.

Overall, Book of Light is filled with excitement; however, it isn’t so scary that it would frighten children. There is a positivity to the story, and the reader generally feels safe behind Jake and his friends. Book of Light isn’t the story that will give you nightmares, but it will keep you on the edge of your seat. This really is a fantastic story, and I highly recommend it for adults and children of all ages.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ll need to be starting on the first two books.

Craig and Lily are the perfect grandchildren. It doesn't get any better than that! After several years of encouragement from Bob, Mary tried her hand at writing. Her first children's book was Molly's Parade. Mary works full time, plays with her grandchildren, goes camping, and is currently working on a poetry book and another children's book.
