For all of my growing-up years, a typed index card was taped to our fridge. My wise mother had used her Royal typewriter to copy the following quotation:

When I became a mother, my mom gave the index card to me. Sometimes, when I would mutter and clean up yet another kitchen mess I hadn't made, I would glance at the card, now hanging on my fridge. The years were slipping through my fingers, and I was worried about splattered olive oil on the backsplash and mounds of clothes on bedroom floors. Precious time was fleeting, and one day, too soon, the house would be tidy, for Jim and I didn't leave wet towels lying around, but neither did we burst, blaze, and glow with goals and dreams. Raising kids, if you're doing it right, is messy. Hospitals and graveyards are neat.
Children have my greatest respect. I'm more interested in arousing enthusiasm in kids than in teaching the facts. Facts will change, but that enthusiasm for exploring the world will remain with them for the rest of their lives.

Author and teacher Velya Jancz-Urban created How Cool Is That?! (Hands-On Science) because of her belief that hands-on learning is for everyone. "When I look back on the classes I remember most, without fail they involved active participation." Wonderful book! Delightfully written!

Whoooo would have thought there would be a children's book about dissecting owl pellets? That subject never crossed my mind until I heard that this project is done in my children's school, and I became curious about it. When I found this book, I was delightfully surprised!! Tastefully written despite the unusual topic, this book gives accurate information in a fun and interesting way. It is a perfect way to introduce this topic to children, or just for the child (or adult) who wants to learn more! It is obvious that the author, Velya Jancz-Urban is passionate about children and teaching. Be sure to read the book from cover to cover....you will learn more about this author and her background, and make sure you visit her "How Cool is That" website to see the reality of this woman's talent. You can also see how you can do this project at home with your children! Thank you, Ms. Jancz-Urban, for your amazing enthusiasm and love of children!

[SPOILER ALERT] the mouse dies. Because that’s nature. Plain and simple. And nature is amazing. Looking forward to another book from Velya Jancz-Urban, who tells it like it is and keeps the kids fascinated. Here’s an idea for the next one. What happens when a snake eats a hippo? Youtube it. Pretty great. Just like this book.

Whooo Eats What is exactly what any curious child wants. The enthusiasm of Mrs. J.U. comes through the pages to peek a child's interest. I love how she skillfully transforms a child's view of what is unpleasant (owl pellets) into something that is extremely interesting. Including a resource for children to find their own owl pellet dissection kit is brilliant. I am excited to see what the second book has in store for my science enthusiasts. Bravo Mrs. J.U.!
